SYSTEM PRESSURE AND VOLUI{E
Waste
To insure 0PTIMUM control of a blowout, the necessary
lncinerators
hydraulic volume and pressures must tre available to
Fuel promptly close the blowout preventers and maintain initial
,'t'-realmenl packoff. As well pressure increases, less closi-ng pressure
ils is required to rnaintain the packoff. Easy, Fosltive clo-
- sure prevents high pressure sand and gas from damaging or
- and more
I
PRESSURE SOURCES
In most instances the use of punps alone to supply
these requirements is unfeasible. Very large capacity
high pressure pumps are expensive initiaLly and economi-
cally unrealistic to operate and maintain. A1so, under
blowout conditions, primary rig power is nornally turned
off, thereby removing the source of power for running the
pumps. The IDEAL solution has been to store large amounts
of hydraulic operating fluid at high pressures by means
of high pressure, 1ow volume punps and hydro-pneumatic
accumulators.
l
ACCUI/IUI-ATORS
ADVANCED DESIGN
As drilling exploration increased, varied dril-ling 1o-
cations and geological formations prescribed blowout
preventers which would control the most severe blowout
conditions. Para11e1 to blowout preventer design improve-
ments, the control systems f or them also i-mproved. In 1957,
the first 5000 PSI working pressure accurnulator system for
blowout preventer controls was introduced to the industry.
Prior to that time most accumulator units were of 1500 PSI
working pressure design. Because of higher well pressures
encountered in portions of West Texas, Mississ:-ppi and other
parts of the wor1d, high pressure blowout preventer and
controls became a necessity. Even in areas where 6xtremely
high well pressures are not prevalent, the 5000 PSI accumu-
lator system is a more efficient piece of equipment than an
accumulator system operating at a l-ower working pl'essure,
because it stores fluid at a higher pressure range and this
allowS for a physically smaller accumulator.
?.
HOt,l THE ACCUlvlUI.ATOR UNIT l.lORKS
VALVE MAI'IIFOLD
A set of four-way hydraulic valves tied-in to the
accurnulators can direct large volumes of the high pres-
sure fluid to the respective preventer or preventers as
needed. As the fluid is discharged from the accumulators
at high volume, the hydraulic pumps will turn on and re-
plenish the accurnulators with the same amount of fluid
us ed.

ANNUI-AR PREVENTER
A KOOMEY pressure reducing and regulating valve can
be installed on the fluid control rnanifold upstream of
last four-way valve on the right when facing the unit.
This valve reduces the accumulator pressure from 3000
PSI to 1500 PSI before entering the annular blowout pre-
venter. This vatrve will also regulate from 0-1500 PSI
so that stripping operations can be performed through
the annular blowout preventer. A separate fluid line
is used from the accumulator system to this KOOMEY pres-
sure reducing and regulating valve and four-way valve
so that full fluid capacity of accumulator can be uti-
l-ized.
