year students of DMU have gone through their internship program from October 08, 2017 to
january 20, 2017.With this regard student Kidist Mequanent, student of DMU construction
technology and managment department, works with YIVA in Addis Ababa city Building
construction project for four month.

Thus, we wanted to certify that she has satisfactory completed his internship program. she was hard

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The objective of this report is to show the activity of the fifth year construction technology and
managment department students who is involved in the internship program. The program is starting
from oct 08,2009 to Jan 25,2009 E.C.This program makes me to join my hosting company which is
known as YIVA ENGINEERING PLC on the side of contractor. In order to provide students with
practical knowledge DEBRE MARKOS University Collage of Technology prepare the internship
program for four months. Therefore, this report is the result of the four months activities in my
hosting company including recommendation and conclusion.

In the first section I want to discuss on the back ground of my hosting company. It also includes the
history of the company like, how and when the company is established..

The section of overall internship experience includes the main part of this report in terms of
expressing the technical works I have involved. I have also described the work experience and
knowledge that I have grasped and gained in every aspect during my internship period in terms of
practical skill, theoretical skill, inter personal communication skill and team playing skill .

Generally it has the description starting from the challenges I have been faced to get into the
company which works in my profession and continued on the section of technical works I have been
involved.

Finally it includes my recommendation and conclusion to the company and the institute based on the
internship program I have involved.

CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND OF MY INTERNSHIP HOST COMPANY

1.1 INTRODUCTION

1.1.1BRIEF HISTORY
As you know those fifth years engineering students of DEBRE MARKOS University Institute of
Technology apply the internship program for four months in different Industries, Enterprise,
andCompanies etc. which related to their field. This program have important role in university
linkage to industries to get potential developed employers for the future our country transformation
plan of development issues because the Engineering has one of vital target in country development
issues. Therefore, to get the goal of these issues we need practically developed employers from
internship.

According to this program as a fifth year student, I had been applying the internship program paper
to the company of YIVA Engineering PLC.

YIVA Engineering PLC is a construction based company in Addis Ababa and mainly involved in
road construction sector. The company was established in 2009 GC with its previous name TAGEL
construction enterprise with the opportunity that the government has arranged for jobless citizens by
the government of Ethiopia Addis Ababa city government micro and small enterprise development
office in combating poverty from our country.

YIVA Engineering is an energetic fast growing company that, it currently upgrades to RC grade
3levels. We have now more than five years of experience in the construction sector and we have
undertaken different construction projects from government and private companies and
accomplished in job opportunities creation. The company strictly adheres to the relevant policies of
the federal democratic Republic of Ethiopia on road construction.

The enterprise has four educated group members which were jobless but now using this chance we
could succeed in developing a leading enterprise from the sector & become a model.

Mission

The mission of the enterprise is to provide a professional engineering service in overall construction
industry(Drainage construction, solid waste management projects, Roads, Bridges, Culverts,
Drainage & Retaining wall Construction, and Residential& Non-Residential buildings) with all
quality construction materials supply and cost effective works to satisfy customers need and also
benefit the employees and group member

Vision

YIVA Engineering PLC is to be an inspiring partnership based construction firm and competitive
service provider.

GOAL

The primer objective of YIVA Engineering PLC is to give services to the communities and
governmental institutions especially Road and drainage structures & building construction. We will
carry out all work professionally, to the highest standards of quality and with agreed time frame, to
provide appropriate and sustainable solution for development activities of the nations in the
construction sector

level we have now more than five years of experience in the construction sector and we have

The main customer that gives design to the company is BETOCH LIMAT to construct design within
a given time and specific costs. Then, the people of the country use the products from the
construction.

PROJECT MANAGER: is a person who manages and control the overall activities on a project
and organizes different components of the site and assigns different professionals such as Engineers,
Forman and other to the components.

OFFICE ENGINEER: This staffs plays a basic role in managing the project in order to avoid any
delaying on the project completion time. Among the tasks an office engineers run

 Preparation of payment sheets

 Preparation of direct and indirect cost
 Preparation of working drawings
 Preparing week plan and evaluations
 Preparation of expenses for

- Manpower

- Material

- Machineries and equipment.

SITE ENGINEER: based on the schedule the office engineers planed and the project managers
approved the site engineer guide and control all the construction activities from the begging. The site
engineer

 Guide the overall site work according to drawings

 Assigning work tasks and general Forman’s
 Quantify some materials and make requests

GENERAL FORMAN: assigns and controls the carpenter Forman, plastering Forman and gang
Leaders. It also

 Guide the overall work process

 Report any challenges during work procedure

There are other work tasks included with in this work flow, which takes part on the construction.
Like

 MACHINE OPERATORS: operate and maintain different machineries like loader,

roller, mixer, plate compactor and so on.

2.4 working procedure I have been used while performing my task
Starting from the beginning day, I have followed how the construction is going step by step. I am
also take notes by asking skilled workers and the site engineer. In this part of the report, I will try to
describe at what step of the work I have started. Basically, I will explain some procedures I have
performed while doing my tasks in my hosting company.

Where I start my work before I start to explain about the procedures I have performed, I want to give
a general description about at what step I have started and the overall figure of the site.

During the fourth month internships program, I have involved in different kind of works as a site
engineer.

In the first two weeks, I spent most of my time with the visiting the new site that I was mainly apply
my internship. We discussed about every activities and works under taken in the construction. We
also discuss about the necessary things to start construction works.

Which are knownas:

 Construction material
 Equipment
 Labor and
 Management

These all are control the quality and punctuality of construction. If we have good quality of
construction material with skilled labor, we can achieve the needed quality. Beside on this, sufficient
amount of equipment and good management helps the construction work within the schedule.

Starting from this time, I controlled the site works carefully whether it is worked according to the
plan or not. If not I recommend the workers to correct and also discuss with the site engineer about
the solution on different practical works.

1.1.5 WORK FLOW OF THE COMPANY
The Manpower of the enterprise can be ground in to two major areas differentiated as technical
expert and support staffs. The technical experts have direct relation with the overall construction and
drilling activity of the Enterprise. Therefore, the enterprise owned and hired qualified expert of
various disciplines including Civil Engineers.

1.2 PROCEDURES I HAVE BEEN USING WHILE PERFORMING MY TASK

2.6 CHALLENGES I HAVE FACING WHILE PERFORMING MY WORKING TASKS

Challenges are the beginning point to get knowledge in site work. Because site work is more of
practical than theory, all site work is faced many type of unexpected natural hazards. But the
mistake which is done by humans is more catastrophic and also difficult to dig out after the
construction is completed. Hence, construction work needs special and nonstop control to
minimize mistakes done by the workmen.

Challenges existed in our site are

Architectural plan does not coincides with the structural plan; - this problem was confused me to
give solution for workers who arise some questions. In addition the plan was not full and makes
some difficulty to guide the workers.
In the site work the workmen do not show care for the quality of work including preservation and
use of materials and equipment’s.
On the other hand the main problem was communication of some local construction words.

2.7 MEASURES I HAVE TAKEN TO OVERCOME THESE CHALLENGES
First of all I take a time to study the plan well. Then I list out the points which are not clear to
understand and compare the structural and architectural plans. After this I discus with the site
engineer on some critical points on the plan he write out those existed problems and send to the
architects of the building.
For the first two and three weeks the site engineer was trained us how to control the works. Then
I concerned on the controlling of the quality, preservation and working procedure of each
materials and equipment. I also solve the work men problems by informing the site engineer.
