NERUDA?
● A Latin American poet
● His real name was Neftalí Ricardo
Reyes Basoalto, but he signed his

NERUDA KNOWN FOR?
● His poetry and involvement in Chilean politics
● First book, Crepusculario, was published in 1923
● Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada
published in 1924
○ Became his most popular work as more than a million and
a half copies were published in Spanish before his death
● From 1927-1935, Pablo Neruda was a diplomático
chileno, which transformed him into a committed
political poet

fresh or green humero corn
● This variety of corn is widespread in
Chile and difficult to find elsewhere

variety of corn was introduced to Chile in the early
1900s
● Humero corn season is from mid-December to
early March, so that is when las humitas are made
to be eaten and stored for later
