INFORMATION SYSTEMS
(GIS) TRAINING

Agenda 1: Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua

1

1. Summary

The purpose of this training is to provide BMKG staff the knowledge and tools needed to
utilize the QGIS software to visualize geospatial data in a simple, creative, and efficient
manner. Participants in this training course should finish with a solid understanding of basic
GIS functions. They will be able to apply the newly gained knowledge to individual projects
assigned to them.

2. Introduction
The US Geological Survey (USGS) was originally formed in 1879 by the US government,
to explore the geology and natural resource potential of the US. Since that time, the scope of
the USGS has evolved significantly. Currently, the USGS provides science on natural
resources, the environment, climate, and natural hazards. The branch of the USGS known as
the Earthquake Science Center, specializes in the scientific study of earthquakes and related
hazards.
Jennifer Battista and Hunter Martin are geoscientists working under Dr. Walter Mooney.
It is our goal for this course to provide clear and concise delivery of GIS techniques so
participants may learn how to create maps of professional quality.

3. Need for GIS Capabilities

The greater Indonesian region is at a constant risk of earthquakes, tsunamis, flooding,
and volcanic eruptions. Numerous subduction zones in the region are located close to high
population centers, thus posing a great seismic hazard. There is a need to understand, record
and observe these events. However, it is not always possible or economical to go into the
field to study the source of these hazards. GIS software and various open-source catalogs has
made remote analysis possible, and relatively simple. This training course is intended to
start with basic techniques that may renew participants’ existing skills and continue with
more advanced techniques that may be applied to future projects.

4. Objectives
The objectives of this tutorial are as follows:

● To provide a basic understanding of the mapmaking capabilities of GIS software

● To provide insight on how to produce detailed maps in a fast and efficient manner
● To demonstrate where to locate applicable data, how to filter this data for desired
results, and how to generate satisfactory visualizations
● This training course will promote the visualization of geophysical data to enhance
the understanding of regional geologic processes

5. Scope of Work

This training course will provide an up to date understanding of commonly available

datasets, as well as a visual application within the QGIS software package. The datasets used
will include global relief data, earthquake catalogs, a volcano catalog and plate boundary
datasets. The length of each lesson is estimated to be around 40-45 minutes. Tasks will
include:

● Creating global relief maps within QGIS

● Inputting, filtering, and visualizing vector data (faults, plate boundaries, volcanoes)
● Creating seismicity maps: Plotting seismicity by time, magnitude, and depth
● Creating 3D topographic visualizations within QGIS using the plugin QGISthreej’s
● Combining datasets of different types: Shallow seismicity and population density
● Creating maps with Tsunami location
