January 6, 2020

Dear diary,

I just came back from China and began the new quarter. The Christmas holiday was so happy

that I wish it could be longer. But I am also looking forward to beginning my second quarter at

UCSB with my new friends! We went to see the sunrise yesterday. It is the first time I see the

sunrise and it is so beautiful!

By the way, I saw someone on social media say that some people in Wuhan, China get

pneumonia for unknown reasons and this pneumonia may be contagious. That is so strange and I

felt a little anxious. I told this news to my mother to remind her to be careful. But Wuhan is far

from my home and we think those patients will be cured soon.

January 23, 2020

Dear diary,

I did not expect the situation to become worse. Now we have more information about this

pneumonia. It is caused by a novel coronavirus which might originate from bats and began

spreading at the Huanan seafood market. The scary thing about this virus is that it can transmit

from human to human easily. More and more people were diagnosed and the government started

to take action. To prevent further transmission in the whole nation, Wuhan was locked down

today. But I heard some people go to other provinces before the lockdown so I was worried

about my home city. In order to be well-prepared, I bought some masks for my family to be well-

prepared.

Wuhan is in chaos. After the lockdown, hospitals were full and the medical supplies were

inadequate, which resulted in many sick people in Wuhan not being able to get to hospitals on

time. I felt so sad to see them have no choice but ask for help on the Internet. Patients are

suffering and there is not an effective way of treatment. I heard that the Chinese government

built cabin hospitals in Wuhan for diagnosed people. It sounds like a great way to isolate patients

and stop further transmission. Other cities including my hometown also have some corona cases

so all people are nervous and scared. I told my mother to stay at home and be careful. Hope

everything will be better soon.

Dear diary,

So many unusual things happened during this quarter. This virus was named as Covid-19 and

confirmed as pandemic by WHO. At the beginning, this virus mainly spread in Wuhan and the

cruise ship “Diamond Princess”. But now many other countries also report Covid-19 cases. The

US declared a national emergency yesterday. All of my finals are canceled and school

announced that we will have online classes next quarter.

I did not think this virus would spread so fast. I have been worried about my family and friends

in China for a long time, but now I have to worry about myself. There are cases worldwide and

even some people in Santa Barbara were diagnosed. I want to go back home but my mother

stopped me and says it is dangerous on the airplane. Hopefully, these patients get over the virus

soon and everything will go back to normal.

April 21, 2020

Dear diary,

Today is my 20th birthday but I felt so sad. I live alone and took online courses for a month. I

hate online courses. It is so difficult for me to concentrate. I want to go back to my home but my

plane tickets have been canceled many times. I read information online everyday and did not see

any sign that tells me the situation would be better. More and more people were diagnosed.

There are some potential treatments in medicine but none of them are proved to be very

effective. The only good news is that the situation in China is getting much better now. The lives

of my family seem to be back to normal. Hope I can go home and see them soon.

Dear diary,

Today is the first time I feel happy since the pandemic began because I will go back to my home

country!

I have been living alone and observing the data about Covid-19 cases worldwide for two months

and I felt so lonely and upset. I stayed indoors everyday since I am afraid that if I get infected, no

one can help me. This drives me crazy. The number of people that were diagnosed with Covid-

19 increased a lot everyday. In the US, the total confirmed Covid-19 cases exceed 1.4 million.

Over 210 countries and territories are affected by coronavirus.

Although this virus seems being undercontrolled in China, it has had terrible effects on the

economy. I heard that my favorite restaurant near my home has to close down and many people

lose their jobs. I am not sure what the future will be like and when the pandemic will end. To be

honest, I felt quite pessimistic about the future since this virus seems already out of control.
