Instructions for the Final Exam

1. The exam will take place on Friday, May 13 (Location: Emerson 305). It will start at 9 am
and end at 11 am. Note that the exam will take 2 hours, NOT 3 hours.

2. Based on the university final exam policy, you are subject to the following:

a. Students arriving after 30 minutes have passed will not be admitted to the exam
room.
b. No student is allowed to turn in their exam as complete and exit the room until 90
minutes have elapsed.
c. No student can exit the room during the last 10 minutes of the exam.
d. You must leave phones and other electronic devices with course staff if you leave the
room during the exam. These devices will be returned to you as soon as you re-enter.

3. The instructional staff is required to take attendance at the examination and to report absences
to the FAS Registrar’s Office after the completion of the examination.

4. The exam is cumulative and will be open-book, so feel free to refer to your notes and course
materials (handouts, slides, ICEs, PSets) during the exam. You are NOT allowed to consult any
other resources beyond the LING 106 Canvas. You must NOT consult any person or people
beyond the instructors in any way, including email, text messages, or any other means of
communication before or during the exam. Violating this direction will count as academic
dishonesty and immediately be reported. You will be asked to sign Harvard Honor Code
Affirmation and Attendance Slip at the beginning of the exam. Please keep in mind that I am
more than happy to help you during the exam if you struggle.

5. The exam questions will be provided as a hard copy, which will also be available on Canvas
when the exam starts. So, if you prefer to use your tablets with a smart pencil to answer the
questions, you are welcome to use the electronic copy. (You might want to do this; see instruction
#6). BUT you are supposed to return the hard copy with your name written on it at the end of the
exam, even if you have used an electronic copy instead.

6. You are required to scan and upload your exam to Gradescope quickly. You will be given
extra time after the exam is over to do this. Please make sure you have a scanning app on your
smartphone. If you don’t have access to one during the exam, we will be happy to help you.

NOTE: If you are taking the exam out of sequence, you must NOT submit your exam on
Gradescope. You must complete the exam on the hard copy, which you will hand in to the proctor
before leaving the exam room.
