COMPREHENSION & MEANING VOCABULARY

ORRR Specific Instructional Goal: 8401 will be able to retell with details and remember fact-
based information from a text accurately.

Comprehension Objective: After re-reading a familiar story, 8401 will be able to sequence the
events of a story in order.

Vocabulary Objective: 8401 will be able to orally define the word “event.”

Rationale: The two sessions prior, 8401 has practiced identifying the main idea of a text, and
two events. It is important for her to also practice remembering the events in order, so she can
better support the main idea claim. In the previous lesson, 8401 was able to successfully identify
the main idea of the text (Sam did not have lunch to eat), and two events from the story, but the
events. She needed support to find her main ideas, and needed to go back to the text to pick
specific events from the story. If 8401 is able to use the strategy of sequencing she will better be
able to remember specific and related events in a story.

Teaching Methods:
The clinician will explain that today we will practice putting events in a story
in order.

The clinician will explain that first we will learn how to put events of a story
in order, then we will reread The Lunchbox Surprise and practice putting the
events in order.

The clinician will explain that it is important to remember as many events

from the story as possible. When we can remember more details in a story, it
will help us provide stronger details when we are writing about the main idea
of a story.

After the conditional knowledge statement, the clinician will explicitly teach
the word event. (“an event is something that happens, sometimes it means
something important. For today’s lesson, an event means something that
I Do, You Watch happens in the story.) Throughout the lesson, the clinician will use the word
event in context.

The clinician will start the comprehension portion of the lesson by showing
8401 how to sequence a book. Using a familiar story, the clinician will give a
short summary of the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Using Jamboard, the clinician will show 8401 the sequencing timeline they
will be filling out, and the couple of pictures/sentences that will be used to
help us sequence. Each sentence will be labeled with a letter, and the timeline
boxes will be numbered.

The clinician will model reading each sentence, selecting the correct first
sentence and stating which letter label is attached to the sentence. Then, she
will move that sentence to the correct space on the jamboard.

During the vocabulary portion of the lesson, the clinician will think aloud
about where she has heard events and will ask 8401 to brainstorm times she
has heard othe word “event.”

The clinician will then think aloud about two parts of the story Goldilocks.
She will ask 8401 to help her decide which should go in the next space.
I Do, You Help
Before 8401 begins the read aloud, the clinician will review the selected food
words from the text using a google slides.

After 8401 orally reads the story, the clinician will show her the sequencing
jamboard. The clinician will orally read the sentences, and identify any
images for the sort.

The clinician will think aloud about the events in the story, and will ask 8401
to help her decide which sentence is the first part of the story. If 8401
identifies the beginning incorrectly, the clinician will think aloud about which
sentence may be a better fit, or if any events listed might have happened
sooner.

If 8401 is unable to remember which event is first, the clinician will show the
book again, and do a picture walk to remind 8401 what the events were.
During the vocabulary section of the lesson the clinician will ask 8401 an
event that happened today (ex. One event that happened today was I ate
breakfast).

8401 will read the story The Lunchbox Surprise over the shared screen. The
You Do, I Help
clinician will encourage 8401 to sound out unfamiliar words and tell her any
words that she is unable to read aloud.

When 8401 shows understanding of how to sequence using the jamboard, the
clinician will instruct 8401 to tell her which sentence she believes goes next.
The clinician will work with 8401 to complete the sort.
Before rereading the story, the clinician will show 8401 the vocabulary words
she wants to read. The book has many food words, and it is important these
are read accurately to fully comprehend the book. The clinician will show
8401 a PowerPoint that has the vocabulary word and a photo of the food. The
You Do, I Watch clinician will ask 8401 to practice reading each food word with picture
support.

At the end of the lesson, the clinician will ask 8401 one more time to define
the word event.

Diagnostic Assessment: The clinician will collect a copy of the final sequencing activity, as
well as anecdotal evidence that 8401 was able to correctly sequence the events within the story.
8401 will have met the assessment criteria if she is able to correctly order the events of the story
provided by the clinician with 80% accuracy (5 of 6 correct), with support from the text.
8401 will have met the assessment criteria for the vocabulary objective if she is able to orally
define the word “event.”
