Natural causes
Man-Made causes
● Large number of Forest Fires are caused by
● 90% of all Forest fires are man made Lightning
● Agriculture Stubble Burning ● Temperature: High temperature leads to
● Timber Smugglers lighting of debris in forests
● Carelessness with Campfires ● Wind: Fast moving winds help in spread of
fire
● Deliberate Arson
● Climate: It has caused increased surface
● Fireworks temperature and aids in fires.
● Scanty Rainfall leads to less moisture in air
Mitigation measures
● Man made forest fires are reduced by using metal in place of wood at
infrastructures
● Flammable debrises are regularly cleaned
● Fire Fighting equipments are kept handy
● Trees and plants are cut down in circumference to break forest fire path
● Avoid burning materials when weather is windy
● All spark creating wirings are properly insulated with mufflers
● Regular checking of systems and components in infrastructure
Effective solution viable for Uttarakhand
● Correcting a historical wrong, less plantation of pine trees which sucks out all
the groundwater leaving the entire area dry.
● Resolving the conflict between local and forest officers
● Reforestation of trees which increase the water retaining capacity of soil.
● Introduction of Forest Awareness programmes and maybe mass awareness
movements like “Chipko Movement” to increase forest awareness.
● More patrolling from the forest department to check miscreants.
● Controlling the climate change in Northern India in a proper way so that the air
is not conducive for fire spread.
