LESSON PLAN

Week: 1_ Taught by: Subhan Saeed

Date: September, 2020 ( )

Subject: Engineering Material And Construction Technology Class: QS 1 st Year (A/B)

QS Department Time: 105 min
Topic: Soil
Objective(s): Students will be able to:
Define soil
General understanding about formation of soil
Can Classify different type soil
Be aware of uses of soil
Skill Focused on: Understanding Basic Materials Used in Construction
Resources:
Marker, board, Multimedia, Text book
Methodology:
 Introduction to soil
Soil may be defined as a mixture of different size of particles in unconsolidated state and formed by the
natural process of disintegration of rock. It exists as a superficial layer of earth crust and bears the load of
different structures.
o Engineering properties of soils vary significantly from place to place, and even across a single
building site.
o Soil is a particulate material that consists of individual particles.
o Soil can contain all three phases of matter (solid, liquid, and gas) simultaneously, and these three
phases can be present in varying proportions.
 Formation of soil
Soil is a product of weathering.
o Weathering: process of breaking down of rocks by mechanical and chemical processes into smaller
pieces.
o Mechanical weathering: expansion and contraction of rocks from the continuous gain and loss of
heat.
o Chemical weathering: the original rock materials are transformed into new minerals by chemical
reaction. Involve water and carbon dioxide from atmosphere that reacts with the existing rock
minerals to form new minerals and soluble salts

 Particle size classification of soil

Soils are generally called gravel, sand, silt or clay.
1. Gravels are pieces of rocks size 76.2mm to 4.75mm
2. Sand particles are made of mostly quartz and feldspar and size 4.75mm to 0.075mm
3. Silts are microscopic soil fractions that contain very fine quartz grains and some flake-shaped
particles size range of 0.075mm to 0.005mm
4. Clays are mostly flake-shaped microscopic /sub-microscopic particles of mica, clay minerals etc
0.005mm to 0.001mm

 Soil can be classified according to

o Shape
o Composition
 Uses/Importance of soil
o For agriculturalist it is used for rising crops.
o For civil Engineers it is used to withstand heavy load of structures.
o For geologists it is used as a source of different minerals.
o It was used as basic material for Pottery manufacturing in ancient times.
o Used in manufacture of bricks, cement and other civil engineering materials.

Activity – 1 Definition terms and usage

Activity – 2 Discussion of application
Activity – 3 Enhance the reorganization ability
Success Criteria:

Assessment plan
A couple of question will be asked from students to clarify the understanding of the whole class, for
example
 Which type of soil can retain water and why?
 What can be the other application of soil?
C.W: Recall all the terms and classification of soil.
H.W: Read from text book
