Q1. State whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE [4]
1. False, Potential Energy is due to position of an object
2. False, Energy can neither be created nor destroyed
3. True
4. True

Q2. Answer in One line [5]

1. Energy is defined as the capacity of doing work. It is the ability to do work.
2. Unit of energy = Joule
Smaller unit of energy = K cal (kilocalorie)
1 K cal = 1000 cal 1 cal = 4.2 J
3. Load x Load arm = Effort x Effort arm
4. Potential Energy
5. During the vertical fall of ball, if friction due to air is neglected, the total sum of potential energy and
kinetic energy at each point of its path remains same.

Q3. Answer in brief [10]

1. In bow and arrow. When we pull the string of bow while holding arrow in the pulled string, some
potential energy is stored due to change in the formation of bow. On releasing the arrow, potential
energy of bow changes into kinetic energy of the arrow. It shoots away due to this energy.
2. It states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only change its form. In other
words total energy is conserved during transformation of energy.
Example : A pendulum potential.
3. Different forms of energy include :
(a) Potential energy : This form of energy is due to position of the object.
(b) Kinetic energy : This form of energy is due to motion of an object.
(c) Electrical energy
(d) Thermal energy
(e) Light energy
(f) Sound energy
4. Yes, a body possesses energy even when it is not in motion ;
Consider a body raised to a certain height say h. It its velocity is zero. Kinetic energy will be zero but
the body will have.
P.E. = mgh
Thus, a body may possess energy even though it is not in motion.

5. A bucket full of water kept on second floor has the greater potential energy. This can be explained as

P.E. = mgh

Mass of both bucket and the gravitational force are same, so the body at greater height will possess
more potential energy.

Q4. Answer in detail [6]

1. The example to show the conversion of potential energy to kinetic energy when put in use is :
A stone at a height has the potential energy due to its lifted or raised position. In the figure below when
the stone is dropped from that position, it begins to fall. The falling stone has the kinetic energy. Thus,
the potential energy stored in the stone in its raised position changes into the kinetic energy when the
stone is falling. This kinetic energy does work on the nail as the stone strikes the nail arid makes the nail
to move into the wood.

Similarly, in the figure below the potential energy possessed by the stone at a height changes into its
kinetic energy when it falls, The kinetic energy of the falling stone does work in raising the weight
upwards.

2. In a roller coaster, the sum of potential energy and kinetic energy of the car at any point is always
constant. So, the total energy is always conserved. When the car is at the top of the coaster, it has its
maximum potential energy. When the car is at the bottom of the coaster, it has its maximum kinetic
energy. When the car is going up or coming down, the potential and kinetic energies readily change
from one form to another.
