CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Virtually all K-12 students in almost all schools all over the World are currently missing

face-to-face instruction due to COVID-19. Many parents and educators share a common worry:

When the pandemic subsides, students will return to school with lower achievement. There are

also concerns that the gap between high- and low-achieving students will become larger. The

COVID-19 pandemic has created the largest disruption of education systems in history, affecting

nearly 1.6 billion students in more than 190 countries and all continents.

Closures of schools and other learning spaces have impacted 94 percent of the world’s

student population, up to 99 percent in low and lower-middle-income countries. The crisis is

exacerbating pre-existing education disparities by reducing the opportunities for many of the

most vulnerable children, youth, and adults – those living in poor or rural areas, girls, refugees,

persons with disabilities, and forcibly displaced persons – to continue their learning. (Education

during COVID-19 and beyond 2020).

With the persisting problem today in the Philippine education system especially during

the pandemic, our stand for functional literacy to empower students is at stake. The scarcity of

teachers, poor classrooms, and the dearth of instructional materials, results in low student

achievement and academic performance and an increasing number of drop-outs, especially in

Grade 7 Science classes during the time of the pandemic where face-to-face modality of learning

is strongly discouraged. The aspects of how to achieve an enhanced achievement test scores of

the students will be challenging on the part of the educators.

Enhancing Achievement Test Scores through Digital Comics Strips in Science 7 3

On the other hand, this crisis has stimulated innovation within the education sector. The

educational sector has seen innovative approaches in support of education and training

continuity: from radio and television to take-home packages. Distance learning solutions were

developed thanks to quick responses by governments and partners all over the world supporting

education continuity, including the Global Education Coalition convened by UNESCO. One of

the important aspects is also been reminded of the essential role of teachers and that governments

and other key partners have an on-going duty of care to education personnel and the students as

well. (UNESCO)

The innovation in delivering education from school to home is a big responsibility not

only on the part of the students and teachers but also the parents in every home. The teachers,

parents, and students should work hand-in-hand to achieve the goal of quality education despite

the challenges brought by the pandemic. The education managers especially teachers must focus

on reforming the delivery of quality instructions and interventions so that the existing curriculum

will not be overwhelmed by the crisis. It is for these reasons that the researcher embarks on

developing techniques, which will enhance learning and remedy the least mastered skills of the

students, thus attain growth in their achievement test scores especially in Science 7.

The reason behind the efficacy of comic strips as a teaching tool is that it engages

students of different learning styles and engaging multiple senses at once. Comic strips help

students practice essential skills like reading, understanding visual concepts, understanding

context clues, speaking, and ultimately, communicating complex ideas in the span of 3-4 panels.

It also evokes thought about provocative issues and can help students understand highly

complicated matters in a condensed and succinct form.

Enhancing Achievement Test Scores through Digital Comics Strips in Science 7 4

Using comic strips can also help young students develop empathy, particularly if the

characters in the comic strips are someone they can relate to. In this way, you are teaching them

a valuable soft skill that will help them be well-rounded individuals in the future. Depending on

the comic strip, it can also make them laugh; helping you ease the tension and stress they may be

feeling after being in school for hours. Depending on the comic strip you choose, it can also

teach your more mature students about cultural issues surrounding them. Editorial cartoons are a

great way to get students thinking; they don’t necessarily have to agree with the image that’s

being presented, but they are encouraged to think about the issue and hopefully create logical

arguments that will help them make sense of what they’re feeling.

Comic strips are also versatile; they can be used in a wide variety of subjects, ranging

from history and literature to math and science. With the right comic strips, teachers can help

students develop their higher-order thinking skills like analysis, evaluation, prediction, inference,

and many others. This multimodal text also helps students gather information from multiple

sources; a valuable skill in our post-digital world. This helps them prepare for a digital landscape

that is rife with fake information and unsearched data. By teaching them to read comic strips,

these students will learn not to take things at face value but rather developed deeper into a

particular thing. It helps them pay attention to detail, and thus, is trained to be aware of the

different ways meaning is constructed and communicated.

The results of the achievement scores in Sampaloc National High School in the previous

quarter in Science 7 are slightly low, therefore this will be the basis of the researcher to use

intervention to enhance the achievement scores using an intervention suited in the new normal

situation of the education. This action research study will be focused on enhancing achievement

test scores through digital comics’ strips in science 7.

Enhancing Achievement Test Scores through Digital Comics Strips in Science 7 5

ACTION RESEARCH QUESTION

This research study will be focused on enhancing achievement test scores of the students

in Science 7 through digital comics strips for the School Year 2020-2021.

Specifically, it will answer the following:

1. What is the level of the achievement test scores of the Science 7 students using digital

comics’ strips in the pre-test?

2. What is the level of the achievement test scores of the Science 7 students using digital

comics’ strips in the post-test?

3. Is there a significant difference between the levels of the achievement test scores of the

Science 7 students using digital comics’ strips in the pre-test and post-test?

HYPOTHESIS

The null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

1. There is no significant difference between the levels of the achievement test scores of

the Science 7 students using digital comics’ strips in the pre-test and post-test?

PROPOSED INNOVATION INTERVENTION AND STRATEGY

Before the implementation of the study, the researcher will asks permission to the

principal of Sampaloc National High School through letter and appearance to his office. The

researcher will also ask the consent of the parents of the Grade 7 students to allow the researcher

to implement the intervention during the approved time and days for the intervention. Likewise,

a letter of permission will be provided to the selected Barangay captain to inform them of the

implementation of the study. The researcher will be conducted a meeting with the respondents’

parents and Barangay captains to inform them regarding the research intervention program and

will be explained to them the objectives and importance of the research intervention activity and

the ethical value. During the implementation of the digital comics strips, the research

intervention activity, the researcher will be planned topics and will be designed the activities

which will be presented to the Grade 7 students. The research will always be considered the

diversity of students with their differences and capabilities. The proper protocols for conducting

face-to-face meetings and orientation will be also considered.

The identified students as the subject of the research intervention will be exposed for 18

weeks to the digital comic’s strips. Topics for the second quarter in Science 7 will be used in the

period of the intervention. The activities and assessments will be prepared by the researcher. The

digital comic’s strips being used during the implementation of the intervention will be properly

evaluated and validated by the Master Teachers and Academic Head of the Science Department.

Pre-test and post-test will be prepared by the researcher which served as the source of

determining the enhancement of the achievement test scores of the Grade 7 students using digital

comics strips.

The different topics which will be covered in the entire implementation of the research

study will be the following topics/ MELCs in Science 7: (1) Identify parts of the microscope and

their functions. (2) Focus specimens using the compound microscope. (3) Describe the different

levels of biological organization from cell to biosphere. (4) Differentiate plant and animal cells

according to the presence or absence of certain organelles.

ACTION RESEARCH METHOD

a. Participants and Other Sources of Data

This research study will be focused on finding out if the intervention can enhance the

level of the achievement scores of the Grade 7 students using digital comics’ strips. The

intervention will be conducted only in Sampaloc National High School for the School Year

2020-2021 within the second quarter of Science 7. The prescribed MELCs in Science 7 will be

the coverage of the topics to be used in the period of the intervention. The subjects of the study

will be Grade 7 Mapagbigay. The first-quarter achievement scores will be the basis for

determining the subjects. Students with a rating of 79- below or the students who need

intervention in Science based on the results of the achievement test will be considered as the

subjects for the intervention. The subjects of the intervention will be consists of 18 Grade, 7

students, with an average of 79 and below or those belongs to the list needs intervention. This

study will be conducted for eighteen weeks covering the chosen topic in the second quarter. One

topic per MELCs will be selected by the researcher.

The target subject for this research will be defined purposively. The subjects include the

Junior High School students belong to section Mapagbigay in the Grade 7 class. In this study, the

accessible population will be comprised of all the students with an average of 79 and below

during the first quarter in Science 7 or those who belong to the list need intervention. This study

will be used the One Group Pretest-Posttests design. It will be used the single group design that

will utilize the pre-test and post-test instruments to determine the significant differences in the

achievement test scores of the students before and after the exposure of the intervention. One-
Enhancing Achievement Test Scores through Digital Comics Strips in Science 7 8

group pretest-posttest design is a type of research design that is most often utilized by behavioral

researchers to determine the effect of a treatment or intervention on a given sample. This

research design is characterized by two features. The first feature is the use of a single group of

participants (i.e., a one-group design).

This feature denotes that all participants are part of a single condition—meaning all

participants are given the same treatments and assessments. The second feature is a linear

ordering that requires the assessment of a dependent variable before and after treatment is

implemented (i.e., a pretest-posttest design). Within pretest-posttest research designs, the effect

of a treatment is determined by calculating the difference between the first assessments of the

dependent variable. (Sage Encyclopedia of Communication Research)

Data Gathering Methods

This action research study will be used standardized teacher-made tests to gather data for

interpretation. The researcher will be constructed two sets of 20-item tests that will be used in the

pre and post-tests, to measure the level of the achievement scores of the Grade 7 whether it will

be enhanced or not. Students using the intervention digital comics strip in the one-quarter base

from the table of specification or budget of work. The twenty (20) test items in the pre-test and

post-test will be a multiple choice type of test with four options a,b,c, and d. The test items will

be reviewed and validated by the Master Teachers as well as the Head Teacher in the Science

Department. The pre-test and post-test will be administered to the identified subjects before and

after employing the intervention. The 20- item tests will be analyzed using construct validation

using a 20-.80 difficulty index, test items with .30 to .80 discrimination index will be discarded

and items that will fall within the prescribed level will be retained.
Enhancing Achievement Test Scores through Digital Comics Strips in Science 7 9

The researcher will distribute the digital comic’s strips. The students will be oriented on

how to perform the intervention. The students will follow the schedule provided by the

researcher. Once a week, the researcher will conduct follow –up to the students to determine if

they can follow the prescribed activities in the module. Another purpose of the follow-up is to

determine if the students have queries or clarification regarding the activities and topics per week

to address properly by the researcher.

Data Analysis Plan

To assure the correct results of the data to be gathered the following statistical tools will
be used.

For research questions, numbers 1 and 2, (1). What is the level of the achievement test

scores of the Science 7 students using digital comics’ strips in the pre-test? (2)What is the level

of the achievement test scores of the Science 7 students using digital comics’ strips in the post-

test? Mean the weighted mean and standard deviation will be used.

For research question number 3, is there a significant difference between the levels of the

achievement test scores of the Science 7 students using digital comics’ strips in the pre-test and

post-test? The level of significance will be used.

To determine, the significant difference and enhancement in the achievement test scores

of the Grade 7 students before and after the exposure to the intervention, a pretest/posttest will be

given and will be compared the result using a t-test to determine, if there is a significant

difference in terms of achievement test scores. The results will then be evaluated. Results of the

pretest and posttest obtain from the subjects will be summarized in tabular form. The table will
Enhancing Achievement Test Scores through Digital Comics Strips in Science 7 10

be interpreted, if there is a significant difference in terms of achievement test scores of the Grade

7 students before and after the exposure to the intervention of digital comics strips.

The statistical tools to be used in the study will be: mean weighted mean, standard

deviation, t-test, and level of significance.

Mean. This determines where most of the scores of the students clustered. Since the

number of students in each group was less than 30, then the ungrouped data was used. This was

done by adding all the scores of the students and the sum was divided by their number.

Weighted Mean-This is will be used to determine the curricular validation of the results

of the pretest/posttest.

Standard Deviation- This is will be used to determine the variability of the students’

abilities or scores. The mean is subtracted from the students’ scores. The difference will be

squared after which the summation will be obtained.

t-Test- This will be used to find out whether the students who will be used the

intervention perform well and achieve better than those who did not. The data for the t-test

arrived at after determining the mean standard deviations.

Level of Significance-To interpret the significant difference in the achievement of the

students, the computed t-value will be compared with the tabular t-value at .05 levels of

significance at 48 degrees of freedom. This will be used also as the basis as to whether the null

hypothesis will be rejected or accepted.

fact, maybe harmful if misused as most of us do.

b. Minimize your exposure to plastics, protect all your stem cells.

c. Minimize your exposure to radiation, protecting your stem cells from DNA damage

d. All of the above

16.What structures do plant cells have that animal cells do not?

a.cell membrane ,chloroplast ,and leucoplast

b.cell membrane ,chromatin ,and nucleolus

c.cell wall ,chloroplast ,and leucoplast

d.cell wall ,chromatin ,and nucleolus

17. What would happen if the cell membrane stopped working?

a.If the cell membrane would stop working, then there would be no diffusion of the water inside

the cell membrane. That would cause a cell to die.

b. It wouldn't be able to produce proteins for the other cells.

c. No protection will be provided in the cell in all the unfavorable conditions.

d. Without cell membrane, higher animals would likely not exist because their cells would only

be able to obtain energy from anaerobic respiration (in the absence of oxygen), a process much

less efficient than aerobic respiration.

18. What can you infer about a plant cell that contains many chloroplasts?

a. greater amount of converted energy from sunlight into a usable organic material that the plant

can use.

b.it may vary depending on the energy converted from sunlight

c.lesser amount of converted energy from sunlight into a usable organic material that the plant

can use.

d.no changes of converted energy from sunlight regardless of the number of chloroplast content

of cells.

19. Predict the outcome to the cell when the nucleus is removed?

a. The cell continues to function and replication will occur.

b. The cell will not die since only one organelle is being removed.

c. The cell will undergo cell division and continue to produce proteins.

d. there is no way the replication can occur. Eventually, the cell will undergo no division and will

die finally.

20.What would happen to a plant cell if the cell wall is not present?

a.No diffusion of water in the cell membrane.

b. Production of proteins will be lesser.

c. There is no production of food if the cell wall is not present.

d. Without the cell wall, the plant cell will collapse.
