Standard form a linear equation is ax +by+c= 0
Equation of x-axis is y =0
Equation of y-axis is x =0
Graph of x = a is a straight line parallel to y-axis at a distance of a units from the y-axis.
Graph of y = b is a straight line parallel to x-axis at a distance of b units from the x-axis.
Unit 1: Drawing graphs of linear equations in two variables

Learning objective: After completing this unit you will be able to:
 Compute the values of x and y which satisfy the given equation.
 Plot the points on a graph paper
Task:

1. Drawing graphs of linear equations in two variables.

The graph of an equation in x and y is the set of all points (x, y) in the Cartesian plane which satisfy the
equation. If y is made the subject of the formula, then y is the dependent variable and x is the independent
variable.

ax c
ax  by  c  y  
b b

For example, we can obtain solutions for equation 2x + y = 4 by making y as the subject and substituting
values of x to find the corresponding values of y.

2 x  y  4  y  2 x  4

For x = 0, y = 4,

For x = 1, y = 2,

For x = 2, y = 0,

The three pairs can now be displayed as the three ordered pairs as (0,4), (1,2), and
(2,0) or in the tabular form as shown.

These points are then plotted on the graph to get a straight line

Special cases of linear equations: The equation y = 2 can be written as 0x + y = 2, and can be considered a
linear equation in two variables where the coefficient of x is 0.
Some solutions of 0x + y = 2, are (1,2), (–1,2), and (4,2) Such a line will be a straight line parallel to
the x-axis.
The graph of an equation in which the coefficient of y is 0, example, x = 4 which can be written as x + 0y =
4 will be parallel to the y-axis.

Practice all questions from the exercise 27A in your rough note book.

Unit 2: Solution of a simultaneous equation graphically

Learning objective: After completing this unit you will be able to:
 Find solution of simultaneous equation graphically
Task:
1. Finding the solution of a pair of linear equations graphically.

 Draw the graph for each of the given equations.

 Find the co-ordinates of the point of intersection of the two lines drawn.
 This will give the common solution of the given equations.
Example: Solve these simultaneous equations by drawing graphs:
3x – y = 2 and x + y = 6
Plot the points as given in the tables and then find the point of intersection .

3x – y = 2 x+y=6

x 0 1 2 x 0 1 2
y –2 1 4 y 6 5 4
The solution of the simultaneous equations is where the two graphs intersect From the graphs
the solution is x = 2, y = 4
