building and construction materials
Student Assessment TASK 4 Project Work

Unit Outcomes
This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to supervise the systems through which materials are selected, acquired and stored
on site for building or construction work up to and including medium rise projects. It ensures the delivery to the site of materials that meet
contract specifications and service requirements for commercial projects.

To achieve the outcomes for this unit, knowledge of relevant building construction materials and technologies, environmental effects on ma-
terials and testing procedures is required.

Delivery Method
This unit will be delivered using a blended approach. You will be required to attend classes as scheduled in your timetable, complete all
learning activities as set by your trainer and assessor and a range of self-directed learning tasks.

If at any stage, you are unable to complete any of the above activities you must contact your trainer/assessor immediately to make alternat-
ive arrangements.

Guided Online Learning Activities

All Guided Online Learning activities in part 1 of this booklet must be completed and submitted to your trainer/assessor to demonstrate that
you have completed the learning section of the material and understand the subject matter.

If you require further assistance with your learning tasks, please make a time with your trainer/assessor to discuss the topic in further detail.

Assessment Materials
To complete these assessments, you will require access to:

 documentation that should normally be available in either a building or construction office

 relevant codes, standards and government regulations

 NS – Not Satisfactory. You have not provided enough evidence to meet all aspects of the assessment task.

Once all assessment tasks have been submitted you will receive an overall result for this unit being:
 C – Competent. All the required assessments have received a result of ‘S’ meaning you have demonstrated that you can success -
fully meet all the unit outcomes.
 NYC – Not Yet Competent. One or more of your assessment tasks have received a result of NS meaning that you have not met
the necessary requirements for that assessment.

Please refer to the student handbook for further information on re-assessment.

Reasonable Adjustments
An adjustment is any measure or action that you may require because of a disability, which has the effect of assisting you to access and par-
ticipate in education and training on the same basis as students without a disability. An adjustment is reasonable if it achieves this purpose
while considering factors such as the nature of your disability, your views, and the potential effect of the adjustment on yourself and others,
who might be affected, and the costs and benefits of making the adjustment.

We must maintain the academic integrity of a course and consider the requirements or components that are inherent or essential to its nature
when assessing whether an adjustment is reasonable. There may be more than one adjustment that is reasonable in a given set of circum -
stances. We will make adjustments that are reasonable and that do not cause unjustifiable hardship to yourself and our organisation.

If at any time whilst you are undertaking the assessment and you require further clarification on the task or you believe you require an as-
sessment to be adjusted due to a disability or other impacting situations please speak to your trainer/assessor for further information or pos-
sible options. During the assessment process your trainer/assessor can assist you with gaining understanding of the task, but they are unable
to provide you with the response or any answers.

Assessment task 3 – Written Project

Explanatory Notes- Student

Each student must complete this Assessment Task.  Do not work in groups, provide your own work.

The intent of this Assessment Task is to show that you can plan building or construction work.

You may prepare your Assessment Task using your own stationery or preferably MS Excel or MS Word format and presentation strategies.

ASSESSMENT DIRECTIONS

To complete this task the student will be use

their Student Workbook as notes to prepare a
matrix of major building materials that would be
required for the construction of a 4000m2 3
storey medium rise shopping complex with base-
ment carpark. They should be 12 major materials
discussed in this project and they should be clas-
sified in the matrix under the headings of phys-
ical properties:

1. Strength – Compressive
2. Durability
3. Versatility
4. Low maintenance
5. Affordability
6. Fire-resistance
7. Thermal mass
8. Albedo effect
9. Low life-cycle CO2 emissions
10. Aesthetics

Each material should be rated on a scale of 1-5,

5 being excellent properties for this function in
the project and 1 – being not desirable.

Complete the report by highlighting the highest

rating materials on your selection

Trainers: Refer to Assessment 1- expected

model assignment in attachment

Class 5: an office building used for professional or commercial purposes, excluding

buildings of Class 6, 7, 8, or 9 but, we will go for Class 7: a building, which is: a. a car-
park;
or b. for storage, or display of goods or produce for sale by wholesale because
we need basement car park and building is multipurpose use.
Classifications of building materials based on above mention properties are classified
as follows:-
1. Compressive Strength – materials like Cement, Steel are used with high grade
of strength such M30 to M50 based on structural configuration. Cement and stell
rate on scale - 4
2. Durability – For high durability In Concrete mix for RCC structure water ratio is
taken less in a concrete batch for high performance. Scale is 5

6

3. Versatilty - Range of products over several different scopes of works. Likewise,

Concrete is used in buildings, bridges, dams, tunnels, sewerage systems pavements,
runways and even roads. Scale of concrete is 5
4. Low-maintenance - long term aspects of sustainability and maintenance such
as low porosity in build- ing materials which is exposed into atmosphere for a long
time. Scale should be 4
5. Affordability - Value vs quality in final selection and inclusion of products to
targeted market. It should be cheap which makes less expense in building construc-
tion.
Scale is 4.2.
6. Fire-resistance - Must meet all the relevant fire resistance codes and standards
(AS4072 Components for the protection of openings in fire- resistant separating
elements). Materials like would, plastic should not be used due less fire-resistance.
Scale for wood, plastic, PVC is 1 and concrete is 3.5.
7. Thermal mass - aligned with Strength and durability . Does it conform to the
requirements of the re- quired minimum standard (e g. AS3700 Masonry/ AS3600
Concrete/ AS4600 cold formed steel struc- tures). Scale should be 3
8. Albedo effect – fraction of solar radiation reflected by a surface or object. The
high "albedo" (reflective qualities) of concrete used in pavements and building walls
means more light is reflected and less heat is absorbed, resulting in cooler temperat-
ures.
Scale is 3.5. It should be less in structural materials used. Some examples are
as follows -
Concrete 0.10 − 0.35
Corrugated roof 0.10 − 0.16
Tar and gravel 0.08 − 0.20
Asphalt 0.05 − 0.20

9. Low Life Cycle CO2 Emission – 80% of a buildings CO2 emissions are generated not by the
produc- tion of the materials used in its construction, but in the electric utilities of the building over its
life-cycle (e.g. lighting, heating, air-conditioning).
Every material used has properties similar to these, it is far more involved than a statement that timber
comes from trees and bricks come from clay and concrete is a mixture of sand, lime and cement.
Building designers often analyse materials to:
a. Ensure the most effective use and effect of all materials used.
b. Ensure that the building lives in the conditions and environment that it is built.
Sustainable materials should be used - In all states of Australia (and very much the world), in both
res- idential and commercial construction builders primarily use materials that are locally produced or
dis- tributed, provide structural and energy integrity and suit our local weather conditions.
With the 6 star energy requirements in the NCC Section 3.12 energy efficiency and insulation value
are important to maintain environmental stability and living comfort.
Scale for non-sustainable materials is 2 and sustainable materials is 4 for carbon emission in project
for building materials.
10. Aesthetics –
Scale should be 3 for materials used for Asthetic like timber, building color, Plaster of
Paris. The aesthetics of a building is one of the principal aspects considered in archi-
tecture.
A building should be designed in order to satisfy requirements regarding
