Task 2B – Key Words

Builder (Joe):     Hi Jim, we have a fair bit of air conditioning running through the building on this
project are you up with the new Australian Standards for the testing of ductwork?
Purchasing Officer (Jim): Yes Joe, The Australian Standard Click or tap here to enter text.

- AS 4254-2002
- Revised – Mid 2012 (Now Two Separate Standards)
- AS 4254.1-2012 & AS 4254.2-2012 (Flexible & Rigid Ducting Respectively)
- From May 2013, both standards are referenced in NCCC (requirements for fire hazard
properties)
- NATA Certified

Builder (Joe):     NATA, what do they have to do with it?

Purchasing Officer (Jim): NATA is Click or tap here to enter text.

- NATA, authority that provides independent assurance of technical competence

- Proven network, best practice industry experts
- Helps customers who require confidence in delivery of NATA products & services
- NATA provides assessment, accreditation & training services
- NATA has laboratories & technical facilities

Builder (Joe):  OK with you. And the timber framing, is that to the normal Australian standard and
sizes?
Purchasing Officer (Jim) Yes. It has been specified as Click or tap here to enter text.

- Specified as AS1684
- 90x35 MPG 10 & 90x45 MPG 10

Builder (Joe):     I am a bit old scho0l with timber ratings what does the mgp stand for again?
Purchasing Officer (Jim): Although sawn timber can be purchased as "un-graded" or "run of mill"
or "non” structural Click or tap here to enter text.

- Generally sold as graded product

- Several methods for grading
- Predict strength for each piece of timber
- Each method is set out in Australian Standard
- Methods include visual stress grading, machine proof stress grading and mechanical stress
grading
- Machine Graded Pine (MPG) , one system of mechanical stress grading
- MPG system provides set of grades with particular properties
- Grades are MGP 10, MGP 12 & MGP 15
Builder (Joe):     Ok then. Do they specify a moisture content?
Purchasing Officer (Jim): They do actually. The moisture content of any structural timber must not

- Exceed 15%

Builder (Joe): That sounds right. Fair amount of concrete in this job, are there any specifications in

AS3600
- Concrete structures
- Principle objective of Standard provides users with nationally acceptable unified rules for
design and detailing of concrete structures & members
- With or without steel reinforcement or prestressing tendons
- Based on principles of structural engineering mechanics
- Secondary objective provides performance criteria against finished structures that can be
assessed for compliance with design requirements
AS1379
- Specification & supply of concrete
- Standard sets out minimum requirement
- Plant & equipment
- Used in supply of concrete, production & if applicable the delivery of concrete in its plastic
state
- Covers specifying, sampling, testing & compliance with certain properties of plastic &
hardened concrete
- Also uniformity of mixing concrete

Builder (Joe):   So, one covers the material, the other covers the use and installation, is there an
Australian Standard for the formwork, that would have to be specific?
Purchasing Officer (Jim): Yes, for sure. The formwork must Click or tap here to enter text.
