KENYA POWER AND LIGHTING COMPANY: TECHNICAL SERVICE DEPARTMENT.

Under the technical service I went through 3 of the section:
1. Repair and maintenance
2. System protection.
3. Workshop.
REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE.
Deals with inspection and corrective repairs to alleviate unsactisfactory conditions, maintenance
and installation of components in a substation.
We identified how a substation operates, the different components of a substation: how each
operates and how they work together in the substation. The components included: power
transformers, instrunment transformers, lightning arrestors, circuit breaker, bus bar, isolator,
remote terminal unit, reactance and capacitor banks, batteries, control panel and relays .
I learnt about tapchangers and the operation and working of on load tap changer. We
identified that the On Load Tap Changer of one of the transformers in shanzu substation was
not working as expected so we carried out cleaning and inspection of the mechanical parts of
the tapchanger and replacement of the accumulator and the oil in the OLTC. We also carried
out the inspection of the motor drive unit and some adjustments were made to ensure the
tapchanger worked synchronously. Inspection of the protective relays of the transformer was
also carried out.
We carried out maintenance of transformers in different substations; this included replacing
bolts on the transformers, wiping of the bushings, identifying sections with hotspots and
replacing the components and painting of the transformers.
Inspection of circuit breakers and panels was also done ; this included cleaning of the vacuum
circuit breakers and ensuring the heaters in the circuit breakers worked as expected.
Earthing restoration was also carried out.
Battery maintenance ; to ensure voltage produced is equal to the specified voltage,to check for
faulty batteries, to check the electrolyte level and to clean the batteries terminals.
I tested and repaired a faulty reclosure at Mbaraki substation by changing its faulty relay and
power suppy circuit.
I also tested power transformer at Diani substation and repaired its motor drive unit.
SYSTEM PROTECTION.
Deals with protection of electrical power systems from faults through disconnection of faulted
parts from the rest of the electrical network. It is in this sector that measurement of
parameters are done by use of Current transformers and voltage transformers.
We identified the components of system protection which included transformer protection,
different protective relays, batteries to provide power in case of power disconnection in the
system and communication channels to allow analysis of current and voltages at remote
terminals of a line to allow remote tripping of equipment.
I identified the different relays such as overcurrent relays and line differential relay. I learnt how
the different protective relays work; for example the distance protection relay. We went to
Kipevu to find out what caused the Circuit breakers in kipevu and Jomvu to trip. We collected
the data from the relays and realized the distance at which the fault occurred and if the the
permissive inter-trip was sent. All the settings of the relay were also taken. We also learnt
about auto reclose and why it is needed.
Commissioning of the Iculu site included carrying out of current transformer and voltage
transformer tests for example the ratio tests.
In system protection, I learnt how the electrical power system is generally protected.

WORKSHOP.
Deals with repair of faulty transformers ,testing and regular maintenance of transformers that
are brought in from the fields.
I identified the various hazards and precautions in the workshop .
I also identified the different parts of a transformer and their functions. I learnt about the
different types of cooling in a transformer and the different winding configurations and the
reasons they are used. I also learnt how the different tests are carried out and why they are
done.
When the transformers are brought in from the field, tests are carried out to identify the fault
in the transformer before it is worked on.
After the fault has been identified, the faulty part is replaced and the transformer is assembled
again before being tested. The tests performed were; winding resistance test, insulation
resistance test, transformer turns ratio test (TTR), induced over voltage, load loss test, separate
source voltage test and break-down voltage test(oil test).
The processed involved in repair of a transformer include: untanking, core dismantle, coil
replacement, core assembly,heating,tanking, and testing.
