PHYSICS
1. Derive the expression for the electric field due dipole at an axial line.
2. Derive the expression for the electric field due dipole at an equatorial line.

of side a. Calculate the force on a charge Q placed at the center of the square.
9. Four charges +q,+q,-q and –q are placed respectively at the four corners A,B,C and D of a square of
side ‘a’. Calculate the electric field at the centre of the square.
10. An electric dipole of dipole moment p is placed in a uniform electric field E. Write the expression
for the torque τ experienced by the dipole. Identify two pairs of perpendicular vectors in the
expression. Show diagrammatically the orientation of the dipole in the field for which the torque is
(i) maximum (ii) half the maximum value (iii) zero.
11. A hollow cylindrical box of length 1 m and area of cross-section 25 cm2 is placed in a three
dimensional coordinate system as shown in the figure. The electric field in the region is given by E
= 50x i, where E is in N/C and x is in metres. Find (i) net flux through the cylinder. (ii) charge
enclosed by the cylinder.

12. Two infinitely large plane thin parallel sheets having surface charge densities σ1 and σ2( σ1> σ2 ) are
shown in the figure. Write the magnitudes and directions of the electric fields in the regions marked
II and II

13. S1 and S2 are two concentric spheres enclosing charges Q and 2Q


respectively as shown in the figure.
(i) What is the ratio of the electric flux through S1 and S2 (ii) How
will the electric flux through the sphere S1 change, if a medium of
dielectric constant k is introduced in the space inside S1 in place of
air?(iii) How will the electric flux through sphere S1 change, if a
medium of dielectric constant k is introduced in the space inside S2 in place of air?
14. If E = 6i +3j + 4k N/C, calculate the electric flux through a surface of area 20 m2 in Y-Z plane.
15. Given a uniform electric field E = 5 x 103i N/C, find the flux of this field through a square of 10
cm on a side whose plane is parallel to the Y-Z plane. What would be the flux through the same
square if the plane makes a 30° angle with the X-axis?
16. How does the electric flux due to a point charge enclosed by a spherical Gaussian surface get
affected when its radius is increased?
17. Charges of magnitudes 2Q and –Q are located at points (a,0,0) and (4a,0,0). Find the ratio of the
flux of the electric field, due to these charges, through concentric spheres of radii 2a and 8a centred
at the origin.
18. In the given figure, charge +Q is placed at the centre of a dotted circle. Work done in taking another
charge +q from A to B is W1 and from B to C is W2.

Which one of the following is correct? Give reason

19. Two small balls, having equal positive charge q coulomb are suspended by two insulating strings of
equal length L metre from a hook fixed to a stand. The whole set up is taken in a satellite into space
where there is no gravity. What is the angle between the two strings and the tension in each string?
20. Two point charges ‘q1’ and ‘q2’ are placed a distance ‘d’ apart as shown in the figure. The electric
field intensity is zero at a point ‘P’ on the line joining them as shown. Write two conclusions that
you can draw from this.
