GEC 9 PRELIMINARY REQUIREMENT

1. Reflect on your secondary education: Did your school comply with RA 1425? How effective was the
Rizal law (if your school complied) in instilling patriotism among secondary school students like you?
(20)

RA 1425 was fully implemented in my school. My secondary education instilled patriotism in me by

exposing me to contemporary issues in Rizal's time that we still see in modern society, such as
corruption, tyranny, and discrimination. As our national hero once said, "the youth are the hope of
the nation," and I would do my part in my own way by excelling in my studies and finding ways to
make a positive impact on society. It was extremely effective because, without RA 1425, I would have
become a liability to society by now.

2. Give three (3) representations of the nineteenth century Philippines as seen in the film “Ganito
Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon” (1976) by Eddie Romero. What can you say about the film’s
representation of this period in history? Which character/s or situation/s of the film can Jose Rizal
relate to given that he lived on this period? (40)

Some of the representations of the 19th century Philippines in the film that I noticed were the
Spaniards' abuse and maltreatment of Filipinos, the lack of proper education for Filipinos living in
barrios and provinces, and the struggle of the Filipino people to find their identity. I believe these
depictions are accurate because they are supported by historical sources and because, at the time,
Spaniards living in the Philippines were referred to as "Filipinos," as mentioned in the film. I can relate
Jose Rizal to Kulas because they share similar ideals, the most notable of which is that being a Filipino
is about how we show our love and patriotism to our own country, and how we take responsibility as
its citizens.

3. Compare your own childhood to that of Jose Rizal’s. Give some notable similarities and differences.
(30)

In comparison to Rizal's childhood, I learned the alphabet at the age of three and was able to read
and write by the age of five. We also have a limited attention span. We both attended a private
Catholic school as children. The difference is that I was a bully in my childhood and got into fights as a
result, whereas Rizal was more well-behaved. Rizal excelled academically as a child. On the other

hand, I was a typical student. Finally, by the time Rizal began formal education, he had become
estranged from his parents. I was always accompanied by my parents, who would accompany me to
school and pick me up when my class was finished.
