STORAGE AND PRESERVATION
PROPELLERS – SPLIT HUB SHELL TYPE
FOR PROPELLERS DESIGNED TO BE FITTED TO HONEYWELL TPE331 SERIES ENGINES

1. Introduction.

A. This specification details requirements for the satisfactory storage and preservation of propellers of
the split hub type.

B. This specification supersedes PS 1016-2-8 for all Dowty Propellers contracts.

2. Requirements.

A. The instructions in paragraph 3 shall be carried out as applicable, whether or not specified on
drawings, and must be used in conjunction with PS 51016-1-1.

3. Procedure.

A. Equipment out of service but installed on an aircraft.

(1) If the equipment has been out of service for a period of three months it is to be drained of oil,
fully inhibited, and re-inhibited after every subsequent twelve months. Refer to paragraph 3.E.
for inhibiting procedure.

(2) Calendar life overhaul periods of installed equipment are given in paragraph 3.C.

(3) Functional operation of the equipment carried out at least once in every seven days constitutes
‘service’, and paragraph 3.A.(1) does not then apply. ‘Functional operation’ shall consist of
exercising the propeller several times throughout its full operating range statically (turbine
engines) or with the engine running (piston engines) as permitted by the engine manufacturer.

(4) If the seven day period operation is not carried out regularly, and the equipment has been out of
service for six months or over, carry out all normal installation functional checks specified by the
engine manufacturer prior to entering or re-entering service.

(5) Protective treatment must be carried out in accordance with paragraph 3.D.

B. Equipment in storage.

(1) Equipment shall be fully inhibited after three months, and re-inhibited after every subsequent
twelve months. Refer to paragraph 3.E. for inhibiting procedure.

(2) Calendar life overhaul periods of stored equipment are referred to in paragraph 3.C.

(3) Protective treatment must be carried out in accordance with paragraph 3.D.

C. Overhaul periods.

(1) Propellers shall be overhauled after not more than five years from new or last overhaul.

D. Protective treatment.

(1) Short term installed equipment (over three months).

(a) No internal protection is necessary during this period.

(b) The equipment is to be kept clean and frequent inspection for corrosion carried out, with
particular attention to blades.

(2) Long term out of service installed equipment (over three months).

(a) Inspect the blades for corrosion and damage, and treat in accordance with the appropriate
manual.

(b) Coat the surfaces of the blades where appropriate with corrosion preventative to DEF
2331, (PX 1), NATO C-614 or MIL-C-16173 Grade 2.

(c) Treat all exposed parts with corrosion preventative oil to DEFSTAN 91-40, (PX 27),
NATO C-615.

(d) Inspect anti-erosion strips prior to installation.

(3) Long term stored equipment (over three months).

(a) Assembled propellers.

1 Coat the surfaces of the blades as in paragraph 3.D.(2)(b).

2 Treat all exposed parts of the hub group as in paragraph 3.D.(2)(c).

3 Cover the propeller hub with greaseproof paper.

(b) Dismantled propellers.

1 Coat the surfaces of the blades as in paragraph 3.D.(2)(b).

2 Coat the blade bearings with Shell Aviation Grease 7 and wrap in greaseproof paper.

3 Coat the cylinder as paragraph 3.D.(2)(c). Alternatively as described in paragraph

3.D.(2)(b).

4 Coat the piston, hub (complete with oil seals) and associated components with
corrosion preventative as in paragraph 3.D.(2)(c). Wrap individually in greaseproof
paper without wiping.

E. Inhibition.

(1) Inhibiting oil.

(a) Equipment shall be inhibited with oil to DEFSTAN 91-40, (PX 27), NATO C-615.

(2) Propeller procedure.

(a) If the propeller is to remain installed but out of service for more than three months the
engine is to be run to ensure circulation of oil. Running should be preferably on oil suitable
for storage – see paragraph 3.E.(1). The engine running is dependent upon the engine
manufacturer’s instructions, which may prohibit such running.

(b) If the propeller is to be stored in the assembled state but not installed, the operations in
paragraph 3.E.(2)(a) are to be carried out prior to removal from the aircraft if permitted.
