DOWTY PROPELLERS STANDARD PRACTICES MANUAL

PS 51014-3
BEARINGS – LINED SPHERICAL BEARINGS, UNSTAKED ASSEMBLY

1. Introduction.

A. This specification details the requirements for the satisfactory fitting of spherical bearings with teflon
type liners, except where they are retained by staking as in PS 51014-2.

B. This specification supersedes PS 1014-3 for all Dowty Propellers contracts.

2. Requirements.

A. Whenever a unit, assembly, or sub-assembly drawing specifies:-

PS 1014-3 *BEARING ASSEMBLY. TORQUE ……..MAX.

* Bearing supplier’s name, e.g., AMPEP

the instructions in this PS shall be carried out.

B. A complete bearing as supplied, consists of a spherical inner bearing running in a Fiberslip liner
bonded to an outer race member. The complete bearing shall be fitted in accordance with para. 3.

3. Procedure.

A. Assembly.

(1) Smear the receiving bore of the housing with Titanine JC5A to PS 709-2.

(2) Cool the bearing in liquid Nitrogen when an interference fit exists.

(3) Press the bearing into its housing using hand pressure on the outer race only. Do not use
mechanical pressure. Do not press the inner race. If assembly is not possible by hand
pressure, cool the bearing in liquid Nitrogen to –60 °C min. (alum. Alloy) or –130 °C min. (steel)
to enable the bearing to be pressed easily into its housing to drawing location dimensions.
If the interference fit is such that cooling of the bearing does not ease assembly sufficiently it is
permissible to heat the housing to 100 °C max (alum. Alloy) or 175 °C max (steel).

(4) Check that the bearing is correctly positioned, wipe off any surplus Titanine JC5A which may
have exuded at both ends of the bore, then allow to regain ambient temperature.

(5) Check that the break-out torque complies with drawing requirements.

The torque should be checked throughout a full 360° movement in the operating plane only:-

B. Treatment.

(1) Ensuring that surplus Titanine JC5A has been removed fill the gap between the bearing and the
housing chamfer with the paint relevant to the unit, taking great care that paint does not enter
the bearing.

(2) No further treatment, other than painting when specified on the drawing, shall be carried out
once a bearing has been fitted to a sub-assembly.

C. Cleaning.

(1) The cleaning of units, assemblies, sub-assemblies and details containing lined bearings shall
be only with cold Genklene, white spirit, or other neutral solvent approved by the Laboratory.
