DOWTY PROPELLERS STANDARD PRACTICES MANUAL

NDT 30/M
PRODUCT SUPPORT TECHNIQUE PROPELLER HUBS – CRACKS AT FRONT SNOUT RADIUS

1. Introduction.

A. It is necessary to carry out examination of certain used propeller hubs for fatigue cracks at the
radius of the front snot. This technique requires the removal of the propeller lock mechanism and
eyebolt guides.

2. Equipment and Material Requirements.

A. A small permanent ‘U’ magnet capable of lifting a weight of 4.5 kg (10 lbs) of steel. Refer to figure 2.

B. Supply of approved magnetic particle inspection fluid, red or black.

C. Supply of clean cloth.

D. Supply of methylated spirits, trichloroethylene or some other suitable solvent cleaner.

E. A low magnification hand lens.

3. Procedure.

A. Dismantle propeller to expose the front snout of the hub.

B. Clean off any dirt or grease in the area to be inspected.

C. Position the hand magnet as illustrated in figure 1 so that the magnet rests across the radius of the
snout.

D. Apply the magnetic particle fluid in a steady stream along the radius.

NOTE: It is important to shake up the fluid to ensure the complete dispersion in the fluid of the
magnetic particles.

E. Repeat this procedure all around the snout radius, inspecting a length of radius no greater than
50.8 mm (2 in) at any one time. Cracks will be revealed as black or red lines as illustrated in figure
1. It should be noted that slight false indications may be produced by tool marks in the radius, but
where cracks occur near the guide holes, they will develop across into the guide holes. Refer to
figure 1.

F. If cracks are discovered, their presence may be verified by the use of the hand held lens. Cracked
hubs are to be removed from service. Satisfactory parts may be returned to service.

G. On completion of tests it is important to ensure that the hub and centres are thoroughly cleaned and
that no residual fluid is left on the hub assembly or allowed to contaminate the interior of the
propeller.
