DOWTY PROPELLERS STANDARD PRACTICES MANUAL

PS 51014-1
ASSEMBLY OF AMPEP FIBERSLIP LINED PLAIN BEARINGS

1. Introduction.

A. This document details requirements for the satisfactory assembly of Ampep Fiberslip lined plain
bearings.

B. The bearing comprise of a Fiberslip liner bonded to a bore of a metal ‘shell’.

C. Instructions have previously been detailed on drawings in accordance with Design Instruction
D.I. 115. Those instructions together with additional features have now been incorporated in this
specification.

D. This specification supersedes PS 1014-1 for all Dowty Propellers contracts.

Any suffix numbers are the same as in the previous PS 1014-1, i.e. for PS 1014-1-1 read
PS 51014-1-1.

2. General Requirements.

A. Whenever a sub-assembly contains an Ampep Fiberslip plain bearing, the instructions in this
specification shall be carried out.

B. All future drawings calling up Ampep Fiberslip plain bearings must specify PS 51014-1.

C. The instructions apply whether the bearing is supplied as a standard bearing (e.g. AGS 3808) or
whether the bearing consists of a Fiberslip liner bonded to a special Dowty Propellers designed
shell.

3. Procedure.

A. Bonding.

(1) The bonding of Fiberslip liners to components shall only be carried out by:-
Ampep Industrial Products Ltd.
Strode Road,
Clevedon
Somerset
BS21 6QQ

B. Machining.

(1) Reaming or machining of Ampep Fiberslip bearings is not permitted.

C. Anodising.

(1) Shall be carried out be Messrs Ampep Industrial Products Ltd. as part of the bonding process.

D. Dowty Propellers bearing to be both Cadmium and Chromium Plated.

(1) Chromium plate the required area to PS 5101-* (* suffix specified on drawing) before fitment of
liner.

(2) Carry out flaw detection to NDT 2DAP.

(3) Send to Ampep Industrial Products Ltd. for incorporation of the Fiberslip liner.

(4) Surfaces to be Cadmium plated are to be degreased by wiping with cold 1.A. (1)
Trichloroethene reference PS 5207.

(5) Immerse bearing in a mild alkaline cleaner as specified in PS 5207.

(6) Then immerse in inhibited hydrochloric acid for one minute maximum e.g. Ferroclean 100 and
rinse as per PS 5207.

(7) For corrosion resistant steels and copper base alloys ‘Nickel Strike’ as specified in PS 5207.

(8) Cadmium plate the required areas to PS 5100-* (* suffix specified on drawing) except for pre-
treatment stress relieving which has already been carried out as part of the chromium plating
process.

E. Bearing Cadmium plated only.

(1) Ensuring liner has been fitted, Cadmium plate the required area to the PS 5100-* specified on
drawing.

F. Bearing re-Cadmium plated.

(1) Strip existing plating, re-plate and passivate to PS 5100-* specified on drawing.

G. After lining under no circumstances must the Fiberslip lined bearing be made the anode in any
subsequent treatment.

H. All other treatments shall be as specified on drawings, or as agreed with the Design Office and
Materials Laboratory.

I. After Cadmium plating or any similar treatment or re-treatment carried out after the liner has been
bonded, bearings must be returned to Ampep Industrial Products Ltd. for inspection and ‘ironing’ of
the liner.

J. Cleaning (after plating).

(1) The cleaning of units, assemblies, sub-assemblies and details containing Ampep Fiberslip
bearings shall be only with cold Genklene, white spirit or other neutral solvent.

K. Assembly.

(1) Ensure that the housing bore has been protectively treated to drawing requirements.

(2) Smear the housing the Titanine JC5A compound to specification PS 5709-2.

(3) Freeze the bearing in liquid Nitrogen to –60 °C min.(alum. Alloy) or –130 °C min (steel) to
enable the bearing to be pressed easily into its housing to drawing location dimensions.

(4) If the interference fit is such that freezing of the bearing does not ease assembly sufficiently it is
permissible to heat the housing to +100 °C max (alum alloy) or +175 °C max (steel).

(5) Wipe off excess Titanine compound (refer to paragraph 3.D. of this PS).

(6) Complete any additional assembly requirements specified on drawing.

L. Inspection.

(1) Flaw detection of sub-assemblies of components and bearing shall only be carried out by
Ampep Industrial Products Ltd. or to a special technique agreed by Dowty Propellers Non
Destructive Test Department.

(2) Before despatch to Ampep Industrial Products Ltd. for bonding of Fiberslip liners, designed
components shall undergo flaw detection to:-

NDT 6 - Steel Components

NDT 8DAP - Non Ferrous Components.

(3) Unsplit bearing liner bores shall be measured with a 3 jet air gauge only, and an allowance of
0,02 (.0008) used to compensate for surface finish.

CAUTION: PLUG GAUGES AND MICROMETERS SHALL NOT BE USED.

(4) Split bearing liner bores present problems of accurate alignment and cannot be satisfactorily
checked by an air gauge. In such cases, inspection is permissible by means of special plug
gauges having generously radiused and polished ends and polished diameters.

CAUTION: GREAT CARE MUST BE TAKEN TO AVOID ANY KIND OF DAMAGE TO THE
FIBERSLIP LINER.
