Chapter 4

Ex 1. The employees of a company were surveyed on questions regarding their educational background (college
degree or no college degree) and marital status (single or married). Of the 800 employees, 500 had college degrees,
160 were single, and 80 were single college graduates.

a. Find the probability that an employee of the company is single or has a college degree.

b. Find the probability that an employ of the company has a college but is not single.

Ex 2. Given that P (A) = 0.3, P (B) = 0.4 and P (A ∩ B) = 0.2.

a. Find P (A0 ∩ B).

b. Find P (A0 ∪ B).

Ex 3. If P (A) = 0.7, P (B) = 0.6, and A and B are independent, find P (A and B).

Ex 4. At a college, 60% of students speak English, 20% speak French, and 5% speak both languages. What is the
probability that a student chosen at random from the college speaks French but not English?

Ex 5. A survey is taken among customers of a fast-food restaurant to determine preference for hamburger or
chicken. Of 100 respondents selected, 30 were children and 70 were adults. 45 preferred hamburger and 55 preferred
chicken. 30 of the children preferred hamburger.
Assume we know that a person prefers hamburger. Find the probability that this individual is a child.

Ex 6. If P (B) = 0.30, P (A|B) = 0.60, and P (A|B 0 ) = 0.5, find P (B|A).

Ex 7. Machines A and B produce 40% and 60% respectively of the production of a component intended for the
motor industry. From experience, it is known that the probability that machine A produces a defective component
is 0.02 while the probability that machine B produces a defective component is 0.05. If a component is selected at
random from a day’s production and is found to be defective, find the probability that it was made by

a) machine A

b) machine B.

Ex 8. A survey of 1,520 Americans adults asked “Do you feel overloaded with too much information?” The results
indicated that of 785 males, 134 answered yes. Of 735 females, 170 answered yes. Suppose that the respondent
chosen is a female. What is the probability that she felt overloaded with too much information?

Ex 9. A volleyball team of 6 is to be chosen from a class of 30. How many possible ways can the team be formed?

Ex 10. How many different ways can a senior project manager and an associate project manager be selected for an
analytics project if there are seven data scientists available?
