The author reflects on trainings attended both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fifteen years of face-to-face seminars allowed for close interaction with speakers and hands-on learning, but traveling and accommodations were required. Webinars are more convenient but less effective for skills training, as the author found it difficult to follow instructions online and learn on their own. Multitasking is also tempting during webinars without in-person supervision. While not ideal, online trainings are necessary for now given the current conditions.

MY REFLECTION
In my fifteen years of teaching I have attended many seminars,
trainings and workshop conducted by the Department of Education and TESDA. The topics/theme are usually related to my field which is Home Economics. I think majority of my seminars and trainings were done before the pandemic. And now with the new normal condition, I only have attended three webinars which were done online. I guess there is a big difference between seminars/training done online and face to face condition. In the face to face seminars we can have a close interaction with the resource person or the speaker as well as with the participants. We can always ask question to the speaker and let him re- demonstrate again a certain process which is unclear to us. We can observe and have a hands on experience. We are always involved in the activity and so the retention is very high because we can apply John Dewey’s learning by doing. Aside from that this face to face seminars afforded me to go many places here in the Philippines like I was able to go to Iloilo City, Cagayan de Oro City and Tagum City. Also I was able to experience staying in a cozy hotels and eat free sumptuous meals provided by the sponsors of the trainings. I was able to gain new friends and it allowed me to unwind from my daily routinely work at my station However with the webinars that I have attended in this new normal condition, although it is with less effort because I just had it in my home with the use of my gadgets and internet connections, there are still disadvantages on it. First, is that I think it’s not effective especially with the topic that we had on the different applications in the computer, I couldn’t follow instantly with the instructions of the speaker and so I became confused and did not learn anything so what I did I study and learn it again on my own. So I think when it comes to learning skills, those webinars are not effective. But when it tackles only theories, we can maybe grasp the information easily if we are just that attentive and make sure to take down notes. Also, another disadvantage of that is sometimes, I could not help but be tempted to multitask during webinars like I would do household chores while I was in the meeting because no one was watching me since I was just at my home. So this hindered me to jot down notes and learn what the speakers tried to discuss. I guess it’s just a matter of self-discipline. One thing is that it would give us hassles especially if there is a sudden internet and power interruption because our gadgets will turned off automatically and there would be a big problem if you stop right at the moment when the speakers have something very important to say or instruct. We just have to wish there will be no problem like that when we are having our webinars. But with the condition that we have right now, we have no other choice than to let ourselves be left behind with the time. We should adapt and accept the new normal way of having trainings and seminars. We just have to pray that someday this present condition will soon pass and we can attend face to face trainings and seminars and everything will be normal and not new normal.
