1) A renowned psychiatrist and researcher claim that the average age of onset of
schizophrenia among the patients in the Philippines is 18 years old. What is the probability
that the onset age for the said mental disorder is below 21 years old (which is indicated on
DSM-V)? Standard deviation is 3.
(15 pts.)

Given: 𝝁= 18; X = 21; 𝝈= 3; z = ?

18 21

Find the z value Add the area from 0.5000

z = x – 𝝁 z = 21 - 18 = 1
𝝈 3 0.5000+0.3413 = 0.8413
P(0 <z<1) = 0.3413
0.8413 x 100 = 84.13

Hence, the probability that the onset age for the said
mental disorder below 21 years old is 84.13%
2) According to research, students who pass the entrance examination of the top universities in
the country allocate an average of 20 hours per week for studying. The standard deviation is 3
hours. What is the probability that these qualified students allot more than 21 hours of study
time a week? (15 pts.)

Given: 𝝁= 20; X = 21; 𝝈= 3; z = ?

20 21

Find the z value Subtract the area from 0.5000

z = x – 𝝁 z = 21 - 20 = 0.33
𝝈 3 0.5000 – 0.1293 = 0.3707
P(0 <z<0.33 = 0.1293
0.3707 x 100 = 3707

Hence, the probability that these qualified students allot

more than 21 hours of study time a week is 37.07%
