Brief Lesson. There are various appellations in Korea. Let’s see how the appellation changes
when you are a woman and when you are a man.

1.Family

In English, there are formal and informal ways to refer to your parents. You can say “father”
to be formal, or “dad” to be casual. The same is true in Korean:

“Dad” in Korean: 아빠 (appa)

“Father” in Korean: 아버지 (abeoji)

“Mom” in Korean: 엄마 (eomma)

“Mother” in Korean: 어머니 (eomeoni)

“Parents” in Korean: 부모님 (bumonim)

Study the family tree below:

Grammar 1: 있다/없다

있다 to have -저는 여동생이 있어요. I have a younger sister.

Course Packet 02

없다 not to have - 저는 여동생이 없어요. 누나가 있어요.

I don’t have a younger sister. I have an older sister.

많다 to be many -저는 가족이 많아요. I have a lot of family members.

살다 to live - 우리 ㅏ족은 베트남에 살아요.Our family lives in Vietnam

Grammar 2:

“하고” expresses the listing of various thigs or people and corresponds to “and’ in
English. “하고” can also indicate the person with which the subject performs an action and
corresponds to “together with” in English. It is usually in the colloquial form. “하고” has the
same meaning and is used in the written form.

가:지금 뭐 해요? What are you doing now?

가:지금 혼자 살아요? Do you live alone?

Course Packet 02

나:아니요. 부모하고 같이 살아요. No. I live with my parents.

하고 vs 와/과

Both “하고” and “와/과” indicate the connection between nouns and nouns or that
they are doing something together . “하고” is mainly used when speaking, and “와/과” is
used when writing, or in formal situations such as speeches and presentations.

Did you understand “하고”? Then complete the sentences as in the example.

2.Clothes Verbs

One thing you will notice is there are several verbs for wear, depending on where the object
is. General clothing (shirt, pants) will use 입다. Shoes and socks will use 신다. Hat, glasses,
stuff on the head will use 쓰다. Stuff on the hands like rings and gloves will use 끼다. 벗다 is
used to mean take off, and is used for any of the objects, no matter where it is.
