1 Introduction
This Instructions bulletin is for the retrofit of a duplex filter in the supply pipe at the free
end of the engine. This will prevent damage from insoluble particles in the system oil
to:

• The actuator cam

• Roller guide for actuator pump
• The roller for roller guides
• The fuel and hydraulic actuator pump casing

NOTE:
This Instructions bulletin is related and in addition to the Technical Bulletin RT-173,
Issue 1, “Duplex filters for RTA engines suffering exhaust cam failures”. This
Instructions bulletin gives a general guide for the installation of the duplex filter in the
supply pipe on the free end of the engine.

4 Work procedure
ATTENTION:
The duplex filter must be installed to the inlet oil pipe on the free end of the engine. The
oil inlet pipe supplies oil to the actuator pump.

Procedure
1. The engine and the lubricating
oil pumps must be set to off.
2. Put the oil pan (1) and the
duplex filter (2) in an applicable
position at the free end.
3. Make the connection pipes
including weld-on flanges. For
material specification, check
chapter 3. For manufacturing
and cleaning of the pipes,
check chapter 5.
4. Clean the connection pipes.
3
5. Install the blind flanges to the
connection pipes. 2
6. Remove the oil inlet pipe (3).
Cut the oil inlet pipe (3).
Weld-on flanges so the new
pipes (4) can later be 1
connected.
Install blind flanges to the oil
inlet pipe sections.
7. Remove the blind flanges from
the new pipes and the oil inlet
pipe sections.

8. Install the new pipes (4) as

shown. Make sure that the pipe
connections are tightened
correctly.

9. Connect the binary output of

the differential pressure
indicator to the AMS. Option A e.g. “Attention! Inlet pipe
10. Set the output in accordance Display text 40 characters oil filter failure”
with the specification given in Option B e.g. “Inlet pipe oil filter
filter manufacturer’s Display text 30 characters failure”
documentation (e.g. 0.5 bar).
Delay 5 seconds
The connection must be done
by AMS technician with any of
these characteristic

5 Procedure during the manufacture of the pipes

5.1 After first bending of the pipe

• Remove all scale and burned sand from the pipes.

• Use a low-pressure air supply to dry the pipe.
• When possible, put the pipe in an acid bath to remove particles that you cannot
remove manually.
• Remove the pipes from the acid bath.
• Use sufficient water to remove all the acid from the pipes.
• Use a low-pressure air supply to dry the pipe.

WARNING:
Injury Hazard: Acid is a dangerous substance and can cause burns. Put on protective
clothing when you use acid. This will prevent injury to personnel.

5.2 After welding or brazing

• Remove all scale etc. from the inner and outer surfaces of the pipes.
• Use a low-pressure air supply to dry the pipe.

5.3 Before installation

• Make sure that the inner and outer surfaces of the pipes are clean.
• Flush the pipes by using oil, a pressure pump and a filter (10 bar to 12 bar) to flush
the pipes. As an alternative, a degreasing agent can be used to flush the pipes.
• Drain the oil, or degreasing agent fully from the pipes.
• Install blank flanges to the pipes to prevent contamination.

ATTENTION:
During assembly, disassembly, shipment and the last assembly procedure, make sure
that there is no contamination in the pipes.
