Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the TLE 10 – Technical Drafting Module on Preparing

Plan Using CAD!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed

and reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City
headed by its Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma.
Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of
Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers
utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing this instructional
resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this
also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially
the 5 Cs, namely: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical
Thinking, and Character while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box
in the body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use

this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
5

allowing them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the
module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the TLE 10 – Technical Drafting Module on Preparing

Plan Using CAD!

opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material
while being an active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

 Always save your work from time to time.

LESSON

LO2 PREPARE PLAN USING CAD

LO2.1 SET UP DRAWINGS ACCORDING TO STANDARD DRAWING
SCALE AND PAPER SIZE

LO2.1.3 CREATING ATTRIBUTES

Attributes can be added to block definitions for making them more

informative. It is like a tag or an informative text associated with a block
8

used for tagging drawing components. For example, you can add an
attribute to a door or window block of a drawing indicating its
manufacturer’s name, size or description. You can also add visible as well as
invisible attribute values to the blocks. For example, the name of a
manufacturer of a furniture block can be kept hidden so that it remains
invisible from drawing area to add privacy whereas the type of furniture can
be made visible so that it appears in drawing area.
In this lesson, you will learn the methods of making, modifying and using
Attributes in your AutoCAD drawing. Let’s start with defining attributes.
9

DEFINING ATTRIBUTES
Let’s make a sample of a door tag icon that will show door
number and sheet number from your floor plan as shown in
the illustration where: D1 is the door number; and A1 is the
sheet number.

To make this tag, follow the procedure below:

1. Create a circle with a horizontal line passing through
its center (a hexagon can also be used but circle is
commonly used for the door attribute and hexagon is for
window attributes);

2. Click on the Define Attributes icon on the Block Definition panel of the
Insert tab or use the shortcut command ATT and press enter. A new
Attribute Definition window will pop up. Perform the following set up.

a. Type the
name of the
tag from the
Tag field of the
Attribute panel
(ex. DOOR_NO).
Make sure you
enter only
uppercase
letters as a tag
without special
characters or
spaces.

b. In the next
field, enter the
prompt that will appear on the Edit Attributes window (ex. ENTER
DOOR NO.).
c. In the Default field, enter the default value, which will appear in
the absence of any input (ex. D1).
d. In the Text Settings panel, select text justification from the
Justification drop-down menu (ex. Middle Center).
10

e. In the Text style field, choose your preferred text style from the
pre-set Text style drop-down (ex. EDTEXT_2).
f. From the Text height field, specify the text height that you want to
assign to the attribute text.
g. Set text rotation angle in the Rotation field. Make sure the “Specify
on-screen” check box is selected from the Insertion Point panel.
h. From the Mode panel, check only the Lock position radio button.
Other Mode panel options include: Invisible, Constant, Verify, Preset,
and Multiple lines.
i. When done, click on OK button to accept the changes and close the
Attribute Definition window.

3. Position the DOOR tag. Click at a point

approximately at the middle of the upper half of the
circle as shown in the illustration.

4. Repeat the process as explained in steps above to

insert one more attribute in the geometry in the
lower half of the circle and name it SHT_NO for the
sheet number. This time position it at the middle of
the lower half of the circle. Your output should look
like the illustration as shown.
MODIFYING ATTRIBUTES
To modify an attribute definition (ex. DOOR_NO.), double-click on it. A new
Edit Attribute Definition window will appear with all defined fields of the
related attribute, like Tag, Prompt and Default values. You can change
respective fields in this Edit Attribute Definition window, and click on OK to
accept the changed values.

ASSIGNING ATTRIBUTES TO BLOCK DEFINITION

In order to make these attribute definitions usable to the floor
plan, you need to insert them in blocks. Follow the procedure
below to convert this door tag icon and attributes into a block
as shown in the illustration.
1. To create the block, click on the Create Block icon on
the Block Definition panel of the Insert tab or use its command
shortcut, B. A new Block Definition window will pop up.
11

2. Name the block as DOOR_TAG.

3. Now click on the Pick point button from the Base point panel and
assign a base point for the block (ex. geometric center of the circle).

4. Then click on the Select objects button from the Objects panel and
select all objects that form the Door Tag block, including attributes.

5. When everything is done, click OK to accept the changes and close

the Block Definition window.

INSERTING BLOCKS WITH ATTRIBUTES

You can insert blocks
containing attributes in
the same way a normal
block is inserted in the
drawing. Click on the
Insert icon on the Block
panel of the Home tab,
and select the block
attribute name
ROOM_TAG. Click at a
point in the drawing
area (door location)
where you want to
insert it.

Note: If the ATTDIA system variable is set to 1, you will see the Edit Attributes
window with all prompts as shown in the Figure; However if the ATTDIA
system variable is set to 0, the prompts will appear on the command line.

EDITING ATTRIBUTE
VALUES
To edit an attribute
value, double-click on
the block containing the
attribute. A new
12

Enhanced Attribute Editor window will appear. This window will contain a
list of all defined attributes of the selected block. Click on the attribute
whose value you want to modify and then enter its new value in the Value
field. Click on OK to apply the changes and close the Enhanced Attribute
Editor window.

EXPLODE AND BURST COMMAND FOR ATTRIBUTED BLOCKS

If you want to return your blocks containing attributes into its constituent
geometries and attributes definitions, you can use the EXPLODE command.
This command will change the defined value of the attribute to its default
tag. But if you want to explode a block containing the attribute in such a
way that its assigned values are kept intact, then use the BURST command.

The BURST command is a part of express tools, and it’s not a native
AutoCAD command. So if you don’t have express tools installed, you may
need to install it before using the BURST command.

Using EXPLODE and BURST command on blocks.

CONCLUSION

Attribute definitions are a great way of storing text information as part of

blocks in AutoCAD drawings. Using this feature, you can store user-defined
information as well as information in the form of fields. The attributes can
also be set to store invisible information in your blocks that will not appear
on your drawing but can be extracted or viewed directly from the DWG file.
