marking with the use of proper measuring tools, and determining the actual length of
the pipe to be cut. You will have also encountered few exercises or practice task that
will enhance your capabilities about the plumbing trade.

Learning Objectives:

After going through this module, you are expected to:

a. read plans and details in accordance with job requirement;
b. interpret plans and details in accordance with job requirement; and
c. draw the partial water distribution layout and sanitary layout.

c. Layout and mark dimensions.

d. Use appropriate measuring tools for laying out.
e. Determine face to face distance according to the allowed engagement length.

Lesson 2 – LAYOUT WORK AREA FOR PIPES INSTALLATION

Plumbing Signs and Symbols

Reading of plan is one of the significant skills that the plumber must learn. Signs,
symbols, and lines have different meanings. Once they are drawn into a plan, for
example in a water distribution layout, it should be understood by the journeyman
plumber. If the plan could be read because the signs and symbols do not match the
drawing legend, the skilled worker may have the difficulty in implementing the project
plan.

6
7
There are many types of fittings and fixtures. Fittings are pipe accessories in the
drainage system such as a coupling, elbow, wye, tee, valve, etcetera which are used to
join two or more pipes together or to change their directions. Fixtures are receptacles
such as water closet, urinal, sink, lavatory, etcetera which are attached to a plumbing
system other than a trap in which water or waste may be collected or retained for
ultimate discharge into the plumbing system.

Partial Toilet Water Distribution Layout and Isometric Representation

SAMPLE SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM

9
Based on isometric representation, the partial toilet plan for the water distribution
contain fittings like gate valve (normally open), tee, faucet, shower valve, shower head,
angle valve, and air chamber cap. The plumbing plan or layout must be supported by
isometric representation for the further piping details. The proper piping connection
details will be easily understood if the signs and symbols applied are the acceptable
drafting standard. Most of the signs and symbols that we use in the plumbing plans are
adopted from American National Standard Institute (ANSI). However, Architects,
Engineers, Master Plumbers and Designers here in the Philippines continue to modify
some of these symbols in order to suit to their design projects. That is why most of the
plans have legend of the signs and symbols with necessary descriptions for they are
using their own symbols.

Here is the isometric 3D representation of the plumbing layout presented in the

previous page. As you can see, the plan for the water distribution is the same as with
the layout in 2D drawings. The signs and symbols jive with the representation. We can
see the fittings such as the gate valve (normally open), tee, faucet, shower valve,
shower head, cap, elbow, angle valve, and lavatory faucet.

Partial Toilet Sanitary Layout and Isometric Representation

The hidden lines show the position of the ventilation pipes and they are
connected to the fixtures so that the water can flow smoothly without being disturbed by
atmospheric pressure. When the fixtures are not properly ventilated it can result to
clogging or back pressure.

12
The correct position of the pipes can be seen in the drawing below. The wye
fittings should be in accordance with the correct direction of water flow going to the
septic tank. The design of the wye fitting direction should not be reversed. If wye fitting
is reversed the water will go first in the wrong direction before exiting down to the septic
tank. The plan needs to be well-designed so that the plumber would do it correctly.
