☐ X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
Students will create a short podcast (1.5 to 3 minutes) about a chosen historical figure listed above
in the standard. Students will listen to my sample podcast first to give them an idea of what to do.
They will then choose which historical figure they would like to study, and conduct research, using
websites such as www.pbslearningmedia.org. I also plan to conduct this lesson in the media center
using their computers, so students will also have access to the resources there, both in books and
online. After I explain the lesson and give them an overview of how to use Anchor (podcast tool),
they will be free to conduct their research and create their podcast. I will be walking around to assist
but it will be a student-led activity, meaning they will have the freedom to choose who they want to
research on and what they discuss about them in their podcast. They will have an hour to complete
their research and record their short podcast. They won’t be required to present them to the class
but I will listen to all of them.
Managing student learning: Since this lesson will take place in the media center, distractions will be
very possible. To defer from this, I will be constantly walking around and checking on students to
make sure they’re staying on task. If they want to grab a book to use for their research, they’ll have
to let me know when they’re getting up from their computer and show me the book before they
return to their seat. This is to help ensure that the book they’ve chosen will help them with their
research. I will also be monitoring students’ computers to make sure they’re staying on task. There
will also be a time limit of one hour to complete their research and record their podcast, roughly a
30 minute split to research and recording. However, if more time is needed, I will give them extra
time.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: This lesson will contain multiple means of Action
and Expression. The students will take action in their learning by choosing the historical figure they
want to learn about, researching them and then actually creating the podcast. The podcast itself will
be an expression of what they learned.
Reflection: I feel that this lesson will have a positive impact on student learning because it allows
students to gain independence and take accountability of their education. While I will be there to
assist them, it will be the students’ responsibility to research and gain the knowledge necessary to
complete the assignment. Not only that, but they will also need to figure out how to create the
podcast using Anchor. This will teach them research skills and how to use the internet tool Anchor.
