"You are too small to fly a kite."

But at seven Philip felt that he r,vas big enough to have a kite; yes, and many other things besides.
He dreamed of kites at night, flew them in his imagination. He would stand for a long time
looking almost tirelessly at the kites of the bigger boys floating in the air like ducks sitting in the
water, or, darting through it almost as swift as stones from a slingshot and there were some kites
that danced in the air like girls stepping delicately from stone, to stone on the muddy road before
the house when it rained.
He thought of kites so much as he decided, even at the risk of a licking, that he was going to
have one.
Philip was under the house busy with paper, scissors thread and flour paste when his mother
called.
"Philipl Philip!"
He did not answer but stopped with the scissors in his hand, the paper on the ground before
him, waiting for he knew not what.
"Philip! Where are you?"
Philip felt a shudder. The tone of his mother's voice was angry. He heard her slippers flopping
down the back step sand then saw her thin, brown legs coming around the house. He thought of
hiding behind one ofthe pillars butjust then she stooped and caught him red- handed.
"Come out from under there!" she ordered.
