Section Three: Reading Comprehension (11-30)

DIRECTIONS: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions 11-30 according
to the information therein. Each question has four choices, A-D. Choose the best alternative and
blacken the letter of your choice on the separate answer sheet provided.

PASSAGE I
1. Did you know that some people don’t do their reading assignments? It’s shocking, but
it’s true. Some students don’t even read short texts that they are assigned in class. There
are many reasons for this. They may be distracted or bored. They may be unwilling to
focus. They may be unconfident readers. Whatever the reason, it has to stop today. Here’s
why?
2. Reading stimulates your mind. It is like a workout for your brain. When people get old,
their muscles begin to deteriorate. They get weaker and their strength leaves them.
Exercise can prevent this loss. The same thing happens to people’s brains when they get
older. Brain power and speed decline with age. Reading strengthens your brain and
prevents these declines.
3. You can benefit from reading in the near-term too. Reading provides knowledge.
Knowledge is power. Therefore, reading can make you a powerful person. You can learn
to do new things by reading. Do you want to play video games? Do you want to design
clothing? Reading can teach you all this and more. But you have to get good at reading,
and the only way to get good at something is to practice.
4. Read everything that you can at school, regardless of whether you find it interesting.
Reading expands your vocabulary. Even a “boring” text can teach you new words.
Having a larger vocabulary will help you better express yourself. You will be able to
speak, write, and think more intelligently. What’s boring about that?
5. Do not just discount a text because it is unfamiliar to you. Each time you read, you are
exposed to new ideas and perspectives. Reading can change the way that you understand
the world. It can give you a broader perspective on things. It can make you worldlier.
You can learn how people live in faraway places. You can learn about cultures different
from your own.
6. Reading is good for your state of mind. It has a calming effect. It can lower your stress
levels and help you relax. You can escape from your troubles for a moment when you
read, it’s a positive escape. The benefits of reading far outweigh those of acting like a
doofus. So do yourself a favour: the next time you get a reading assignment, take as much
as you can from it. Squeeze it for every drop of knowledge that it contains. Then move
onto the next one.
11. Which one of the following best expresses the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Reading is exciting. C. Age affects the body in many ways.
B. Reading strengthens you mind. D. Working out keeps your body in shape.

PASSAGE II
Marie Curie was one of the most accomplished scientists in history. Together with her husband,
Pierre, she discovered radium, an element widely used for treating cancer, and studied uranium and
other radioactive substances. Pierre and Marie's amicable collaboration later helped to unlock the
secrets of the atom.

Marie was born in 1867 in Warsaw, Poland, where her father was a professor of physics. At the early
age, she displayed a brilliant mind and a blithe personality. Her great exuberance for learning
prompted her to continue with her studies after high school. She became disgruntled, however, when
she learned that the university in Warsaw was closed to women. Determined to receive a higher
education, she defiantly left Poland and in 1891 entered the Sorbonne, a French university, where she
earned her master's degree and doctorate in physics.

Marie was fortunate to have studied at the Sorbonne with some of the greatest scientists of her day,
one of whom was Pierre Curie. Marie and Pierre were married in 1895 and spent many productive
years working together in the physics laboratory. A short time after they discovered radium, Pierre
was killed by a horse-drawn wagon in 1906. Marie was stunned by this horrible misfortune and
endured heartbreaking anguish. Despondently she recalled their close relationship and the joy that
they had shared in scientific research. The fact that she had two young daughters to raise by herself
greatly increased her distress.

Curie's feeling of desolation finally began to fade when she was asked to succeed her husband as a
physics professor at the Sorbonne. She was the first woman to be given a professorship at the world-
famous university. In 1911 she received the Nobel Prize in chemistry for isolating radium. Although
Marie Curie eventually suffered a fatal illness from her long exposure to radium, she never became
disillusioned about her work. Regardless of the consequences, she had dedicated herself to science
and to revealing the mysteries of the physical world.
