Thesis Abstract
Baello, Ashley A.
Year: 2022
The use of social media addiction of students in senior high school has been
observed by the researchers. Research has shown that the addiction by students in
senior high school has been increasing in numbers.
This study aims to determine how many of the senior high school students
are addicted to social media. An online survey form was distributed to students in
NEU Pampanga Branch, Senior High School Department. The respondents
volunteered and kindly answered the said survey. Analysis of the responses
demonstrated that the majority of the senior high school students were indeed
addicted with the use of social media. The results indicate that senior high school
students are indeed addicted to social media although some of them are on the
neutral side.
CHAPTER I
Our objective for this research is to see how many teenagers of our age are addicted
to social media. We will explore our research question and the parameters in which
it will operate in relation to the population and timeframe. We will pick the students
of the school New Era University as our correspondents for our research. We will
use surveys and forums as our method for our study.
As it is not possible for us to cover every aspect of this certain topic, we will narrow
it down to a certain section of the target population. We will base our research on
a section or a strand of this school so that we will be able to handle it easier and
make our research concise. This study does not cover how addiction affects
teenagers’ daily lives and how it affects their parents as well. This study is limited to
only the statement of the problem.
Beneficiaries of this research are most likely teenagers and parents. They will be able
to assess themselves (for teenagers) and their children (for adults) on their addiction
towards social media, the time they spend on their phones or social media, and
correct themselves. They will be able to assess and observe themselves and be able
to see the results for themselves. The benefits of this research are not only for
additional knowledge, but also for future purposes and studies. This study can be
used as a reference for future studies and research.

Definition of Terms
Social Media – Websites and applications that enable users to create and share
content or to participate in social networking. Users construct online communities
to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content through modes
of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking.)
CHAPTER II
This chapter present the related literature and studies after the thorough and in-
depth search done by the researchers. This will also present the theoretical and
conceptual framework to fully understand the research to be done.
According to Internet World Stats (2017), based on data from key Internet research
groups (Nielsen/NR, eTForcasts, CIAlmanac, ITU, IWS, CIA), the number of
Internet users worldwide rose by nearly 3 billion 732 million individuals as of March
2017. (49.6 percent). Internet usage increased at a pace of 933.8 percent between
2000 and 2017. According to the same study, the number of internet users in Turkey
is roughly 46 million 283 persons (59.6 percent), while the number of social media
(Facebook) users is approximately 41 million people (53.2 percent). It has been
found that social media usage in Turkey is greater than in Europe (37.6 percent). It
is difficult to characterize today's extensively utilized social media. McCay-Peet and
Quan-Haas provided one of the most complete definitions (2017). This definition
defines social media as a web-based service that enables individuals, groups, and
organizations to cooperate, connect, engage, and establish communities by
generating, re-creating, altering, sharing, and forming user-generated content. From
a technology standpoint, social media is described as an Internet-based collection of
apps that enable the generation of Web 2.0 intellectual and technologically based
and user-driven content, as well as mutual exchange (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010).

METHODOLOGY
Research Design
This research uses a quantitative design. In this research, the researchers studied the
social media addiction of senior high school students, and to see the condition of
their addiction. It used the Social Media Addiction Scale which was created and
borrowed from Cengiz Shin.
Research Instrument
The instrument used for the gathering of data for this survey is through online
survey, made from Google Forms.
CHAPTER IV
The gender of the respondents are, 75% are female, while 25% are male.

Question: What social media platforms do the respondents use? (Check all that
apply.)
In this part of the survey questionnaire, it shows that the respondents from New
Era University, a
total of 55% of
the respondents
agrees with the
question, while a
total of 25%
strongly agree,
and the lowest
total is the neutral answer with a percentage 20%. This is one of the many
questions in the survey wherein many agreed with the question. According to the
answer that came from the survey, many students use social media as a guide or

reminder about their homework and activities, and this is where they get their
answers or help in answering their assignments.
This is another question that came from the survey. The question was “I pass over
my homework because I spend much time on social media.” In this chart, it shows
that the answer with the largest percentage is the answer “Neutral” with 45%,
followed by “Disagree” with
30% and “Strongly
Disagree” with 15%, 10%
for the answer “Agree” and
no answer for the “Strongly
Agree”. There is a
possibility that the questions
“Keeping informed about the things related to my courses (e.g homework,
activities) makes me always stay on social media.” and the question “I pass over
my homework because I spend a lot of time on social media.” that social media
does not interfere for teenager’s learning, as long as each student knows how to
handle and differentiate social media time and study time.
This is another survey question that was included in the questionnaire. According
to the survey result, the
answer with the highest
percentage is “Disagree”
with 50% and following it is
“Neutral” with 20%.
“Agree” and “Strongly
Disagree” both has 15%
based on the received responses.

Question 3: “I surf on social media to keep informed about what social media
groups share.”
In this graph, the percentage of "Neutral" is higher, at 45%, indicating that most
survey respondents are not biased when it comes to social network group shares.
Because some of the poll
respondents were looking at
group shares to gather
information on social media,
the second highest
proportion was "Agree,"
which received 35%.
"Disagree" and "Strongly Disagree" received the same number (10%) because
some individuals use social media to have fun and this is what they like to do,
while others use social media to relieve stress.
NEW ERA UNIVERSITY
Senior High School
The question for this graph is “I feel bad if I am obliged to decrease the time I
spend on social media”. The
data simply reveals that the
majority of respondents to the
question "Disagree," with 40%
responding that it is not against
them if they cut their time
spent on social media. Others
choose "Neutral," which received 30%, since they can minimize their usage of
social media because they may use it at any time or day they wish. Others agree
that they feel awful since their time spent on social media has decreased; it is their
pastime, or others spend virtually their whole day on social media. The lowest
proportion is "Strongly Disagree," which received only 10% since it is not against
their desire to spend less time on social media. So what happens to social media
users is that they are entertained, and others on social media take information
because what you are looking for, you will find on social media, especially in
today's era that is still spreading COVID-19 because others are unable to leave
their own homes because some are under community lockdown, so most are on
social media spinning their day.
This section presents data gathered from a few New Era University students who
voluntarily participated in the researchers' survey from the question "I have
physical problems because of
social media." This pie chart
shows that 25% (25%)
answered "Agree," which is the
highest percentage among the
other options. When "Strongly
agree," "Neutral," and "Disagree" were merged, 60% and
NEW ERA UNIVERSITY
Senior High School
15% of "Strongly Disagree" here. According to the results of this poll, there is
already a health concern with regular usage of social media.
This is one of the items on the questionnaire from the researchers' survey, the
question was “I do not even notice that I am hungry and thirsty when I am on
social media.” It indicates that "Disagree" has the highest proportion with 35%
followed by "Agree" with 25%
and "Strongly Disagree" with 20%
and 15% were "Neutral",with the
lowest score being 5% "Strongly
Agree." Many people disagree
with the question "I don't even
realize that I am hungry and thirsty while I am on social media," which may be
related to the question "I have bodily difficulties because of social media."
According to the percentages of individuals who believe that their health or self-
care may have been neglected as a result of their frequent use of social media,
there may be a medical concern.
Question 5: “Even if my family frowns upon, I can’t give up to use social media.”
According to this pie chart, 35% of respondents chose “Neutral”, the choice with the
greatest percentage among the others. When the two are combined, 25% “Disagree” and
“Strongly Disagree”, yielding 50%.
And just 15% “Agree”. This is one
of the harmful consequences of
teens' excessive use of social media,
even though they have been
admonished by their parents, and
there are still those who agree with
it even slightly. To address this, youngsters should avoid it because it has a detrimental
impact. They may have a strained connection with their parents, or there may be
misunderstandings. Teenagers that do this require parental supervision in order to learn.
NEW ERA UNIVERSITY
Senior High School
This is one of the items on the questionnaire from the researchers' survey, “I see social
media as an escape from the real world”. According to the report, the majority of
respondents 45% chose “Neutral”. 25% said they “Agree”, 10% said they “Strongly
Agree”, and 15% said they “Strongly Disagree”. This survey question was well accepted.
There is a potential that it is related
to the question "Even though my
family frowns upon it, I can't stop
using social media." Teens may use
social media because they are
unhappy at home, or teenagers may
not have a good relationship with
their parents or whoever they are with at home. Teenagers use social media to have fun
and escape reality, and because they are still in the exploring period, and things are
figuring out, it is probable that this problem will definitely develop.
