CHAPTER I
Background of the study
The modern world is a place where the connection between individuals is simplified by
the various channels and platforms available to us on the internet. The impact of social media
on millennials has been more evident as compared to older generations. (Juice
Academy,2018)
Social media is computer-based applications that facilitate the sharing of ideas,
thoughts, and information through the building of virtual networks and communities. They
are websites designed to allow people to share content quickly, efficiently, and in real-time.
Social media has different categories based on their various functions. Keep in mind that all
social media platforms are not created equally. They are categorized according to hyper-
specific user interests and technology features.
While social networks like Facebook and Twitter help you connect with people,
Discussion forums like Reddit and Quora create a platform for you to share news and ideas.
(Anonymous)
People have turned to social media to preserve social contacts after being advised to
stay at home for virtually the entire year. The similar thing happened in academic settings.
Schools all across the world have implemented a hybrid of online learning and social media.
Social media has become an integral aspect of today's schooling, from student-teacher
chatrooms to class pages serving as bulletin boards. There are numerous advantages to using
social media for students. Reliable means of communication like, group projects, reports,
papers, and other announcements are easily accessible through social media.
Social media is an effective broadcast system if you want several people to know about
something. This is why social media marketing exists. The same principle applies to the
academic use of social media for educational purposes. Students who are in group projects
can collaborate easily as their generation is more inclined to use social media as a tool to
advance in their education. In situations where physical learning is not possible, education
can still move on with the help of social media. This is also a significant plus for overseas
students or students from a different state since it eliminates the need for transportation and
lodging. Social media is a powerful tool that makes distance learning possible. Students
won’t need to meet up unnecessarily, thus also cutting high costs even for in-state students.
Sometimes, the prospect of participating in class in front of an entire group of people you
barely know is stressful. For this reason, a lot of shy students remain silent during class
discussions because they feel awkward voicing themselves in a crowd. With social media, the
physical distance from the rest of the group lessens this stress as well as the students’
inhibition to provide their input and opinion on topics that are open for discussion.
Professors and instructors are sometimes surprised by how some students who are
usually wallflowers suddenly become very active in an online setting. With social media, you
don’t have to wait until the next meeting before you can ask a question. Since it is up and
running all day and night, students can quickly post a question or challenge that they’ve
encountered with a lesson or activity. And because the students can quickly post questions
and answers any time needed, the information is freely flowing throughout the entire class,
access to the information provided by the teacher and the discussions opened by other
students. This will make learning like a continuous process that is not limited to only a few
sessions within classrooms. All students have access to it anywhere they can, for as long as
they have a phone and an internet connection. Nothing is perfect. Social media is far from
perfect.
You cannot avoid that aside from advantages, there are also disadvantages of social
media for students. Here are a couple of risks associated with social media use. The most
apparent disadvantage that social media has is its ability to distract students from learning. It
will take a lot of discipline to keep your focus on lessons if there are social and entertainment
notifications in the same place that you are having your academics. An actual physical class
is still different from online learning. Social media can negatively impact students’ ability to
interact in a real-world setting. There are subtleties in communication, such as body language
and nonverbal cues that make up a significant portion of conversations beyond just words.
With the increased use of social media, students may weaken or eventually lose their ability
to connect socially the way people do when face-to-face. This is even true with video calls
and conferences because a large portion of body language can not effectively translate
through video. Finally, there seems to be more social hostility in social media. Since people
are less-inhibited to say what they want, some don’t just become more participative. They can
become quite harsh and combative with their words. Personal attacks and bullying are
common in social media. If students are increasing their use of social media for academic
purposes, they are consequently also increasing their exposure to the risk of cyber-bullying.
(Vanessa R, 2020)
Access to the teacher's information and the discussions initiated by other students. This
will make learning a continual process rather than one limited to a few classroom sessions. It
is available to all students at any time, as long as they have a phone and an internet
connection.

Performance
Statement of the Problem
The Researchers wanted to know the advantages and disadvantages of Social Media to the
Academic Performance of student in G12 ABM.
Specifically, the researcher wants to answer the following questions:
1. What are the negative effects of social media to the students Academic Performance?
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages that social media can affect to the students
Academic Performance.
Scope and Delimitations
The scope of this study focuses on how does the advantages and disadvantages of social
media affects the G12 ABM students in Tukuran Technical Vocational High School.
This study involves how they use social media in their academic and everyday life.
The respondents of the study are limited for 40 students.
The researchers will conduct a survey of 20 students in every Senior High School ABM
strand in the fourth semester of school year 2021-2022.
Significance of the Study
This study is deemed significant to the Parents. The students, teachers.
Students- this study gives them new ideas on how social media can be useful in further
professional growth and development coping with the new educational setting.
Parents- this study gives knowledge and also guide their children in using social media.
Teachers- this study may help the teachers on how to handle and guide the students in
using social media.
Definition of terms
Education- can be thought of as the transmission of the values and accumulated
knowledge of a society. Discipline that is concerned with methods of teaching and learning in
schools or school-like environments as opposed to various non- formal and informal means
of socialization (e.g., rural development projects and education through parent-child
relationships).
Social Media- refers to a computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas,
thoughts, and information through virtual networks and communities. Social media is
internet-based and gives users quick electronic communication of content, such as personal
information, documents, videos, and photos. Users engage with social media via a computer,
tablet, or smartphone via web-based software or applications.
Advantages- a condition or circumstance that puts one in a favorable or superior position.
Disadvantage- an unfavorable circumstance or condition that reduces the chances of success or
effectiveness.
"a major disadvantage is the limited nature of the data"
CHAPTER II
Review Related Literature
Media platforms is beneficial to students, especially students of the university or other
tertiary institutions who are charged with term paper, project, and other forms of academic
activities which require research, as it aids their research. The social media aids research
through vital information provided on various social media platforms, blogs, and websites.
This enables students to make a search on a particular topic and instantly get results. Also
through the Social Media, such student will be able to ask questions to friends and even
strangers; as there are currently some social media platforms where question and genuine
answers on any particular topic or question is entertained. This will help the student in
acquiring the necessary materials and information for his or her research work.
A student nowadays can hardly get by without social media. Students in higher
institutions and above are frequently informed via social media, even if it is only the
most basic information. As a result, if you are not available on social media, you are
likely to miss important information. Wherever you are on social media, however, it
will be a tool for obtaining information. Because of the development of modernized
and advanced social media platforms, schools are now offering online classes and
programs where students may learn from the comfort of their own homes.
A wise man once said that “Distraction leads to destruction.” Thus via the
Social Media a whole lot of students become distracted, and this often leads to the
destruction of their academic excellence; which is the major reason why they are in
school. This flows from the fact that Social Media distracts students as a result of
their overreliance on it. This overreliance makes students become addicted to social
media, and this will have a negative effect on such student within and outside school.
This is the reason why you may see a student pressing phone in a crucial
meeting or chatting on Social Media while in Church. Time is of essence in school
where there is always an academic calendar which must be adhered to. Failure to
work alongside this calendar is detrimental to the student’s bid to move into the next
class. This is why time management is very essential for students in school. However,
Social Media impedes time Management as you could see a student spend hours on
Social Media forgetting all other thing he or she was meant to do.( Edeh, 2021)
For teenagers, social media may be a major source of distraction. This is
especially true in class when students use laptops or other gadgets. According to a
recent study, children who use laptops in class are more likely to receive poor grades
and even miss school. Furthermore, many students waste time on social media sites
when they should be studying. This could result in poor marks or perhaps expulsion
from school.
Another issue with social media is the way it can impact students’ mental health. Social
media can be a breeding ground for comparison and envy, which can lead to depression and
anxiety. Additionally, cyberbullying is a huge problem on social media networks, and it can
have devastating effects on students’ mental health. Social media can also have an impact on
student’s physical health. Students who spend a lot of time on social media are more likely to
be obese and to suffer from other health problems.(Blackboard, 2022)
This addiction hampers with the academic performance of a student as they waste their
time on social media instead of studying. When we look at the positive aspect of social media,
we find numerous advantages. The most important being a great device for education. All the
information one requires is just a click away. Students can educate themselves on various
topics using social media. Moreover, live lectures are now possible because of social media.
( Anonymous)
Browsing too much on the internet is not good when it not about studies. Some
students watch videos, use media in order to divert/forget the stress or they use it as a stress
reliever. But what they don’t know is because of these entertaining/ addicting page they
forgot their studies, how they should work hard in order to achieve their dreams and be the
best of them. Media is one problems on students in time management but on the other hand, it
helps students to learn many ways than one. The most obvious downside of social media is its
tendency to divert students' attention away from their studies. If you have social and
entertainment notifications in the same area as your academics, it will take a lot of discipline
to stay focused on your lectures.
Media platforms and students have a strong relationship with one another. On the one
hand, social media apps are a great way for them to get in touch with each other and work
together, but on the other, they can be a big distraction and can cause some serious long-term
issues. If you’re wondering how many students use social media, then the answer is ‘a lot’.
Those students need to find a balance between the use of social media and their academic
performance, as both seem to get more and more intertwined with one another as time goes
by. If you would like to write such a paper yourself, you can check out an essay on Social
Media to use as a basis for your own research. Reading a free essay on social media is crucial
to develop a better understanding of the good and bad of such websites and services, which is
a precursor to writing a great essay yourself. Through the use of social media, students can
not only collaborate with each other but also get exposed to diverse interactions. They no
longer have contact with just their classmates and teachers but potentially with students from
around the world. This allows them to reach many different ideas about a topic that they may
be writing papers on. (Anonymous)
One of the most effective ways for social media to improve academic achievement among
students is to allow them to connect with industry leaders and experts. One of the best things
you can do as a student is to ask a question directly to someone whose work you like or
whose subject you are studying, and social media allows you to do so. Using social media to
collaborate on group projects is a breeze. Many students are aware that accessing their
college or university's online platforms can be cumbersome and inefficient. When they have
to cooperate on a project with other students, they can use tools they already use on a regular
basis to establish groups and conduct video chats, for example. Students exhibited a moderate
level of social networking addiction, with male students having a higher level of addiction
than female students. The overall use of social networks and student academic achievement
had a negative and substantial association. As a result, it is critical that university officials
take proactive steps to assist students who are addicted to these networks and educate them
about the dangers of social media addiction through workshops.
Related Studies
Research finds different opinions regarding the role of social media in higher
education whether that is through virtual or real classes. It is found that using social media
either does not effect students’ academic performance at all or if it does, the effects are very
slight. The researchers say that different institutions have established facilities to take greater
benefits from social media but there is still lack of proper integration of these media into
educational setup to gain maximum benefits. Some studies find positive relationship between
social media and students’ academic performance, which means that using social media has
positive effects on students’ achievement on examinations and assessments. It is also found
by the research that it depends upon students’ personality traits whether social media will
affect their performance negatively or positively. Some personality traits cause social media
to enhance students’ performance while some personality factors cause social media usage to
negatively affect students results. Studying the effects of Facebook on academic performance
of undergraduate students at Lulea University of Technology Sweden, Rouis, Limayem &
Salehi-Sangari found that those students who have extrovert (friendly) personalities, then
their academic performance is negatively affected by use of social media. Again, they argue
that extroverts are often good in self-regulation. This characteristic of self-regulation reduces
the negative impact of social media usage on their academic performance. They also
conclude that the extent of deep involvement (also called cognitive absorption) determines
about how much time students spend on Facebook and how many times do they visit
Facebook. Thus, this level of deep involvement with Facebook can affect students’
performance. Multitasking is another personal characteristic of humans. Multitasking skills of
students control the effects of social media on students’ performance. (Steve, 2017)
Junco in his research done in 2012 found that time spent on Facebook and frequency of
visiting Facebook are negatively related to students’ performance. Similarly, they also found
that time spent on social media and time spent on homework are negatively related. Junco
explained that when students use social media in certain ways, then it has negative effects on
their performance. Therefore he suggests that this issue should further researched. He
observes that some specific uses of social media improve academic performance of students
while other ways lower their performance.
Gupta (2013) studied the effects of social media on the performance of students in
distance education. His research also finds that students’ use of Facebook as social medium
for academic purposes has no strong relationship with the academic performance of the
students. This research suggests that new online tools and technologies must be integrated to
promote online interaction and form online social networks to improve learning, students’
achievements, and support. Gupta also observed that teachers perceived that social media
does not add any value to students’ academic performance. The results showed that 97% of
the students used social media applications. Only 1% of them used social media for academic
purposes. Whereas 35% of them used these platforms to chat with others, 43% of them
browsed these sites to pass time. Moreover, 57% of them were addicted to social media.
Additionally, 52% of them reported that social media use had affected their learning
activities, 66% of them felt more drawn toward social media than toward academic activities,
and 74% of them spent their free time on social media platforms. The most popular
applications (i.e., based on usage) were Snapchat (45%), Instagram (22%), Twitter (18%),
and WhatsApp (7%). Further, 46% and 39% of them reported going to bed between 11 pm
and 12 am and between 1 am and 2 am, respectively. Finally, 68% of them attributed their
delayed bedtime to social media use, and 59% of them reported that social media had affected
their social interactions. Students who use online platforms frequently may lose their capacity
to communicate face to face. Students must know how to communicate in the actual world,
even if the world is going to technology. Cyberbullying is becoming increasingly common on
social media platforms. This has turned into a worrying trend. Students may write harsh
words about other students, which may leave a lasting impression on them. Another issue
with social media is that it is impossible to predict whether or not kids will use it
constructively. On social media, students may publish inappropriate content such as
pornography. This will completely destroy the objective of the medium. Students can use
social media to meet friends and get their education at the same time.
