MV Motor Diagnostic Tests

(Detailed description)

1. IR & PI Test (IEEE-1068, IEEE-112-8.1, IEEE-1415, IEEE-43-12) (FAT,

PM): To check over all condition of insulation of the complete winding. The
test results should be corrected to a standard temperature of 40OC.

Acceptable values for IR Test (IEEE-1415, IEEE-43)

Sr. Minimum Test specimen
No insulation
. resistance
1 IR min=1+kV Windings prior to 1970, all field windings, other
not described below
2 IR min=100 MΩ Most DC armature and AC windings built after
1970 (form wound coils)
3 IR min=5 MΩ Most machines with Random wound stator coils
and form wound coils rated below 1kV
IR min is IR value at 40 C for complete machine, kV is rated line-line
O

voltage in rms kV
If the IR value (at 40 °C) is greater than 5000 MΩ, the P.I. may be ambiguous
and can be disregarded

1 Class A 1.5
2 Class E 1.75
3 Class B 2.0
4 Class F 2.0
5 Class H 2.0
As per IEEE 43-2000, this test method is only truly valid on pre-1970
insulation systems.
