EXPERIMENT 2: ELECTRIC FIELD PLOTTING
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the equipotential contours and electric field configuration.
APPARATUS REQUIRED:
 Field plotting board
 Digital voltmeter
 Power supply
 A4 standard paper sheets
 Scissors, ruler
THEORY:
We have,

V =∫ ⃗
E . d l⃗
When d ⃗l is taken in equipotential lines, V =0.

E nor d ⃗l are zero. So, for⃗

But neither ⃗ ⃗ there must be an angle of 90degrees between them.

When a small length is chosen normal to the surface Δ n , opposite to⃗

Discussion and Conclusion:
In each of the cases of plotted field, some errors were observed. The field plotting board
and power supply gave fluctuations in equipotential readings, So the plotted curve came
out to be of distorted necklace shape than expected necklace shape. Also, for second part
with circular center, the curves made were not radial and gave distorted shape too.
Provided that the equipment worked properly, more accurate equipotential plot would be
obtained.

Hence, the equipotential contours and electric field configuration was obtained and plotted in the
paper.
