Overall thesis or argument of book: Overall, the Korean War has much less of an
historical significance compared to other wars such as the Vietnam war despite being
similar in severity.

What other/sub arguments does the book make?

One example of a sub argument that the book makes is that for some, closure still
hasn’t been brought for the war because of the current day results of the war, including
the division of Korea.

Which subtopic will you further research and why?

I will further research the experience of immigrating to the US because of the war. I
chose this subtopic due to its similarity to my parent’s immigration even though they
weren’t forced here due to war, violence, or anything of that nature. Additionally, the
topics also interest me in general because of how far the immigrants were able to go
within one generation.

Aftermath of the war

Quote:

"After the conflict, North Korea became an isolated dictatorship. South Korea emerged as a
global manufacturing power and one of our state's leading partners in international trade"

Paraphrase:

After the war, the country was divided into two pieces where one was affected positively and the
other negatively.
My Ideas:

I think that unlike in Vietnam, which stayed together after the war and is not isolated nor a
dictatorship, North Korea's creation lead to a lot of suffering and pain of both North and South
Koreans.

Immigration of the Kims

Source:

Hughes, John C., et al. Korea 65: The Forgotten War Remembered. Olympia, Office of the
Secretary of State, Legacy Washington, 2017.

Quote:

"THE KIMS BEGAN PETITIONING for naturalization. And in 1975 at the age of 17 the future
state representative became a United States citizen. She chose her own new name. "Cindy"
sounded a lot like her Korean name, Sin Hi, which she combined to Sinhi as her middle name"

Paraphrase:

Overall, they were able to successfully leave Korea after the war and division of the peninsula.

My Ideas:

I think that they were very lucky to have been able to immigrate to the US. However, I think that
it probably wasn't easy to get citizenship in the US. Additionally, I think that they would have
had a a long road ahead of them and a lot of difficult situations to face in order to suceed.

Introduction to the Korean War from Washington

Source:
Hughes, John C., et al. Korea 65: The Forgotten War Remembered. Olympia, Office of the
Secretary of State, Legacy Washington, 2017.

Pages:

12

Quote:

"Washington State supplied manpower and all manner of material in the Korean War... 122,000
Washingtonians fought in Korea; 532 never returned. In all, some 7,800 American solider remain
MIA,"

Paraphrase:

Overall, the summary of this passage was to give readers context into the scale of the war.
Additionally, the passage aids in describing how deadly the war was and the amount of
individuals that died or went MIA.

My Ideas:

Close to a 10% of the soldiers sent by Washington went missing, which I believe is a lot.
Additionally, there seems to be a misconception of American's contribution in the war compared
to other wars such as vietnam.

Life in America - 26 years after

Quote:

After 26 years of hard work, they were able to sell their insurance agency and go on to their other
life's passions. Cindy entered politics full time as a way to make a difference in her community.
Cody took on a different path. His family had been founding members of the United Presbyterian
Church of Seattle and over the years his faith grew until he decided it was his calling to receive a
Master's in Divinity.

Paraphrase:
After a lot of hard work, Cindy and Cody were able to pursue their "American Dreams", despite
coming from a unfortunate background.

My Ideas:

I think that they're really lucky to have gotten the chance to do this and become this successful in
America in such a short time. Additionally, I believe it would be good to include a perspective
where it didn't go so well as this is the "ideal" life for a immigrant.

Life in the US

Source:

Hughes, John C., et al. Korea 65: The Forgotten War Remembered. Olympia, Office of the
Secretary of State, Legacy Washington, 2017.

Quote:

"Cindy landed a job with the City of Seattle's Department of Construction and Land Use. She
really enjoyed the work, thinking she'd be a 30-year employee. Her husband was starting his own
Allstate Insurance Agency. As is customary with Korean families, they were very close to Cody's
parents, even living in their basement for a time. But that proved stressful. Cody was busy at the
agency. Cindy was a full-time working mom with a commute"

Paraphrase:

When they had just moved to the US, there were in a rough spot and didn't have much money,
time, or luck in general.

My Ideas:

I think that for all immigrants, it is always hard trying to get a start here in the US. However, for
the Kims, after decades of hard work and persistence, they were able to achieve their goals and
dreams.
