POST-PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT 2

Post-Philosophy Statement

Special education has been designed to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability.

By providing essential learning tools to fit every student’s needs. This gives them the

opportunity to be able to learn, and understand school curriculums.

The overriding purpose of special education in our society and community is to ensure

the students are provided with an environment that allows them to be educated effectively. This

will help them with their unique needs, and enables a student to gain a high level of

independence and reach their full potential. By providing the tools and necessities they are given

the opportunity to learn, and reach many goals.

In my Pre-Personal Philosophy, I strongly felt that many teachers don’t have a connection

with their students. A connection that is needed to make their students feel comfortable. By

having a connection, we shape the path to a better relationship. Students are then able to open up

more, and ask for help when needed. My thoughts have not changed, I still feel this an important

role in education. When students feel supported, they will most likely engage in learning, and

simply do better in school. They also have fewer behavioral problems which keeps the classroom

on track, and at peace. I also stated that I would need to be firmer with my future students,

though I still agree with this I feel I shouldn’t have to be that way. By showing respect and

having the students understand what is expected of them should be enough for them to

understand that they need to give respect back. I still strongly believe teachers are role models,

they are the ones that go above and beyond to make sure their students achieve in every aspect in

their lives. They are educators, moms, nurses, friends, and tutors they all fall into these

categories because they are with us every step of the way. They only wish to see them succeed,

and be the best version of our selves. Though I agree with a lot of points made in my pre-

personal philosophy I personally have changed and have a better understanding of what it is to be

a special education teacher. I did not have the information needed to take the correct steps into

really knowing what the students need.

The role of the special education teacher is to be an advocate for students with disabilities

and special needs. They adapt general education lessons by teaching various subjects to students

with mild to moderate disabilities. Also teaching those with severe disabilities basic skills. They

are emotional, and physical support for their students. Students with special needs learn best by

being hands on. Forming small groups where in one group those who need the extra help on a

topic can focus on the basics. While in the other group those who are a bit advanced can continue

to do what they without pushing them back. Having different groups can help teach them at their

same level. Giving them the appropriate tools that fits their needs such as pencil grips,

magnifiers, screen reading software, text to speech systems, and much more.

Similar and different goals are both presented in students with and without special

education classes. They both want to feel like they belong, they want to be treated the same.

They want to be able to learn as much as they can in order to succeed now and in the future.

Differences they both tend to have is that special education gives the extra help and tools needed

in order for their students to learnt he information. Many students with regular classes don’t get

the extra help or are too scared to ask for help. Special education is designed for the needs of

differently abled-children. They contain the tools that every student needs to fit their disability.

General classrooms are all just put in one and taught art the same level.

An effective special education teacher should have a good understanding of their students

needs. By understanding the student’s needs they have a better understanding of what tools they

need to succeed in the class. They should be able to be very patient because their students need

time and repetition in order observe the information. I personally believe being patient is a very

significant trait to have. By having this trait, you have a better chance of catching where your

students seem to struggle. Additional skills that I would need to be effective with students with

special needs is to listen. By really listening to them I have a better chance of helping them with

their problems. I would also need to be patient and understand they take time to really

understand things. By being patient, I will allow them to the take their time and not feel

pressured.

Overall, we have to be very understanding and knowledgeable when it comes to special

education students. We need to understand that they need us to teach them the way of things. We

are their role models and mentors.
