LESSON SUMMARY

Mention the types of rock

1. Igneous rock
2. Sedimentary rock
3. Metamorphic rocks

The igneous rock

Igneous rocks are also called fire rocks and they form magma. Igneous rocks are of two kinds
 Extrusive igneous rock e.g basalt which reaches the earth surface. . Basalt is formed from small crystals
 Intrusive igneous rock e.g granite which forms within the crust. Granite is formed from large crystals

Both rocks are made from crystal of minerals that stick together. When the hot rocks cool down, basalt is exposed to the air,
it cools down quickly which make the small crystals form. Granites remaining in the crust stays warmer for longer and
cools more slowly. This makes larger crystals

Rapid cooling

Obsidian is an example of rocks that cool down so rapidly when they emerge into the air that the crystals do not have time
to form. It is black glassy rock. Another type is purnice which was formed from frothy lava. The froth is full of bubbles
made from gases formed in the hot rock, when gases escape it turns into a very porous rock. It contains so many air spaces
that it can float.

Volcanoes

Andesite Rocks from volcanic eruption are the first set of rocks to be identified as igneous rock. There are two types of
volcanoes. The first type builds up pressure and then erupts in a huge explosion, sending rock and dust high into the
atmosphere. They form cones and are known as the andesitic volcanoes. They were first identified in Andes mountain in
south Africa and they are named after that. When lave cools it forms a rock called andesite.

Basaltic volcanoes it is called basaltic because of the type of rock it produces, it is flatter than andesitic rock and it is
sometimes called a shield volcano. Eruption from basaltic are not as violent as the andesitic volcanoes. They can occur on
the sea and on the land

EVALUATION

Educator evaluates the learners based on the lesson objectives.

1. Mention two rocks that form from magma

2. Which of this rock did marble form
Chalk Limestone Granite Slate.
3. Explain rapid cooling and volcanoes

CONCLUSION
The educator summarizes the lesson and gives room for questions from the learners.

HOME-WORK

Educator assigns the following task as homework:
