SECTION 15951

ACOUSTICAL TREATMENT

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of Contract, including General and Special


Conditions, and Division 1 - Specification sections, apply to work of this section.

B. The requirements specified in this section apply to all related


sections in this Division. The requirements of all related sections,
elsewhere in this division also apply to this section unless specified
to the contrary.

1.2 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A. The work includes the providing of all labor, supervision, materials, equipment,
accessories, services and tests necessary to complete and make ready for operation
by the Owner, a complete noise control system, in accordance with Drawings and
Specifications.

B. System complete with:

1. Sound-linings;

2. Sound Attenuators

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturers: Firms regularly engaged in manufacture of acoustical treatment


equipment of the types and materials, sizes and capacities required, whose products
have been in satisfactory use in similar service for not less than 5 years. Provide
acoustical treatment equipment and materials produced by a manufacturer listed as
an Acceptable Manufacturer.

B. Standards Compliance: Comply with requirements of applicable local codes and


the following:

1. ASHRAE

2. NFPA

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets.

B. Instructions: Erection and installation instructions.

C. Test Reports: Factory performance data and field tests.

D. Certification: Sound lining meets erosion test method described in U.L.


Publication No. 181.

1.4. Noise Criteria


Plant and system will be selected and designed to ensure the following internal noise levels
are not exceeded , from air conditioning plant only .

2. Fan Coil Unit

a. The maximum permissible sound power levels in octave bands for fan coil units
run at medium speed shall be as follows:

b. The fan coil unit manufacturer shall submit to the Architect's representative
guaranteed sound power levels by octave bands. Sound power level data
submitted shall substantiate that the equipment types and sizes operating in an
installed condition as per plans and specifications shall conform with these
requirements.

c. The fan coil units shall be tested in accordance with ASHRAE Standard 36B-63
with ratings tabulated for medium speed operation.

d. Should the Owner desire that units be checked for conformance to the above
acoustical performance, the cost of such test will be paid by the Owner
provided that the test proves that the unit does conform. Otherwise, the cost of
such test and costs of corrective measures shall be borne by the manufacturer.

3. Grilles, Registers, Diffusers: The maximum permissible sound power levels in octave
bands of grilles, registers and diffusers when operated in an installed condition per
plans and specifications, shall be as follows:

4. Single Duct Variable Volume Units Radiated Noise

a. Where variable volume boxes locate in ceiling plenums over occupied spaces,
the maximum permissible radiated sound power levels in octave bands when
operated in an installed conditions per plans and specifications, shall be as
follows:

b. The manufacturer shall submit to the Architect's representative guaranteed
radiated sound power levels in octave bands, and shall substantiate the
equipment operating in an installed condition as per plans and specifications
shall conform with those discussed above.

c. Should the Owner desire that units be checked for conformance to the above
acoustical performance, the cost of such test will be paid by the Owner
provided that the test proves conformance. Otherwise, the cost of such test
and costs of corrective measures shall be borne by the manufacturer.

5. Acoustical Performance Within Equipment Spaces:

a. Equipment room noise levels and noise transmission to adjacent buildings shall
comply with all Local Noise Ordinances.

6. Refrigeration Machine Acoustical Performance:

a. The maximum permissible noise levels under design operating conditions,


when measured in accordance with ARI Standard 575-73 specified methods
and qualifications, shall not exceed 90 dBa.

7. Cooling Tower Acoustical Performance:

a. The maximum permissible noise levels under design operating conditions shall
be as follows:

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 ACOUSTICAL TREATMENT

A. Low Velocity Duct Lining: Low velocity supply, return and exhaust ductwork
shall be installed with acoustical lining where specified. Such acoustic lining shall
be a minimum of 25 mm thick mat faced duct liner meeting the requirements of
NFPA 90-A, and be 25 kg/cu.m density fiberglass. Flamespread: maximum 25,
fuel contributed and smoke developed: maximum 50, suitable for duct velocity of

20 m/sec, dynamic loss coefficient: maximum 1.2, K factor: maximum .036 ,
noise reduction coefficient: for 25mm thick lining: minimum 0.75, Dimensions
of lined ducts shown on drawings are the inside dimensions of the ducts after the
lining has been installed. Duct liner shall be adhered with 100% coverage
Mechanical fasteners which do not pierce the sheet metal shall be on 400 mm
centers on top sections (when width exceeds 300 mm) and on sides (when height
exceeds 600 mm. All abutting edges of acoustic linings shall be folded under and
stapled to insure that all raw edges are sealed, and all exposed edges of acoustic
linings shall be installed with sheet metal nosing. An inner liner need not be
provided to cover acoustic insulation except for medium and high pressure
ductwork or where duct velocity exceeds 12.5m/sec. Ductwork shall be provided
with an inner liner. The liner shall be .70mm min. 28% perforated galvanized sheet
metal.

1. The following ductwork shall be acoustically lined:

a. Built-up casing walls and ceiling of all plenums except that lining
shall be 50 mm thick 50kg/m3 density, and inner liner shall be used
for all systems.
b. All supply, return and exhaust rectangular ductwork (except kitchen
and laundry exhaust) within mechanical equipment rooms. If the
distance from fan discharge to shaft inlet or mechanical room wall is
less than 10 meters minimum, continue acoustical lining to a
distance of 10 meters from fan inlet and discharge.
c. Return air fan and toilet exhaust fan plenum walls and ceilings,
except lining shall be 50mm thick 50kg/m3 density, (for walk-in fan
plenums inner liner shall be used).
d. Upstream of toilet exhaust fans a minimum distance of 10 meters.
e. Transfer air ducts.
f. Downstream of fan coil units (full length).
g. Rectangular ductwork downstream of variable volume boxes a
minimum of 4.5 meters.
h. Line all linear diffuser plenums with minimum 13mm liner.
i. Where shown on drawings.

2.2 SOUND ATTENUATORS

A. Factory pre-fabricated.

B. Shell:

1. Galvanized steel: minimum .90mm

E. Net Insertion Loss Ratings:

1. Determined by duct-to-reverberant room test method at design airflow shall


be as per Table 4

G. Certified Tests:

1. Submit certified test data from approved laboratory for pressure drop and
insertion loss ratings.

a. For square or rectangular attenuators: 610 x 610mm.

b. For round attenuators: 610mm.

c. Certification data for pressure drop and net insertion loss: based on
tests of same attenuator.

d. Attenuators and tests: subject to inspection upon request of


Architect.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 SOUND ATTENUATORS

A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations to obtain published


performance.

A. Sound Attenuators, including certified test data.
