Introduction
Centre for Social Security, Action, and Research is an NGO located
in Delhi, engaged in developmental and educational work for
children. The NGO aims to uplift the education level of the children
in slums by teaching them at no cost and at the same time
complements the gaps in school education, thus, sustaining the
interest of children in formal education.
Shiksha Shakti run by CSSAR is a targeted program for
underprivileged children who live in slums and villages in
which special coaching is provided to improve their
education level. Children, both in primary as well as
secondary school facing learning challenges and are from
families that fall below Poverty Line (BPL), are identified
for this program.
Outcomes
We were involved in the Shiksha Shakti program of CSSAR at
New Shyam Nagar, New Delhi. The Assignment assigned
involved teaching the curriculum to children from 1 st to 10 th
grade and making the learning experience enriching through
our own creativity and knowledge.
A supervising mentor was present throughout the sessions
that we taught who helped us get in touch with the
curriculum and get familiar with the background of the class.
We were required to teach the children all the subjects as taught per
CBSE which involved –
 English, Hindi, Maths, Science, and SST – 6th to 10th
 English, Hindi, Maths – 1st to 5th
We were required to supplement the curriculum in an interactive yet
learning retention manner which ensured growth and development
for the children which we ensured through adopting practices like
revising old concepts, individually checking on the previous
knowledge of children, and textbooks to find out information and
tests.
Three centers of CSSAR were present at New Shyam Nagar wherein
we took turns educating children of various age groups.
We were also required to prepare case studies and document the
children’s lives by interviewing them.
Methods
In the first week, I worked under Sheetal Ma’am who was
responsible for children in 1st to 5th grade. There, I was required to
teach children the most basic concepts and help them grasp them
better. The curriculum involved –
Maths Counting up to 100, Number Names up to 100,
Tables from 2 to 12, addition upto 2 digits,
subtraction upto 2 digits, multiplication 2
digits, and division upto single digit
English Capital A-Z, Small a-z, Acrophonics, Read and
Write Names of Fruits, Vegetables, writing 2-
letter, 3-letter and 4 letter words, Forming
Sentences and writing paragraphs: Myself, My
school, etc.,

Every day, children were given homework to practice their learning

and a test for all subjects for all grades was conducted at the end of
the week to understand how much were they able to grasp in the
week. Through team activities, games, and brainstorming sessions, it
became easier to grasp the attention of the little children and it
resulted in greater productivity and attentiveness from their end.
In the second and third week, I was required to teach another center
for children from 1st to 7th grade.
The curriculum covered included:
Maths Counting up to 100, Number Names up to 100,
Tables from 2 to 12, add up to 2 digits,
subtraction up to 2 digits, multiplication up to 2
digits, and division up to single digit, Fractions,
Number System, Whole Numbers, Negative
Numbers, Drawing the number line, Integers,
and doing various mathematical operators on
them, BODMAS rules and application
English Capital A-Z, Small a-z, Acrophonics, Read and
Write Names of Fruits, Vegetables, writing 2-
letter, 3-letter and 4 letter words, Forming
Sentences and writing paragraphs: Myself, My
school, etc., Articles, Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs
Using reading material to find out Nouns,
Articles, Pronouns and Verbs
Writing – Paragraph Writing, Creative writing

Active recall was used to check the knowledge of the middle

schoolers on various concepts of Maths and English. Board rotation
was one of the prominent methods that I used which excited the
children and made them eager to solve more questions, thus also
arousing the competitive spirit among them.
During the second week, we were also assigned a task to interview
the children studying at the NGO and document them in an attempt to
understand where they are coming from and later on, write case
studies for the same.
I interviewed a bunch of children asking them about themselves, their
current educational qualifications, and family background. After that,
we tried to understand what was exactly a hindrance in their
education and at the same time, took feedback from the children on
how CSSAR helped them excel in them.
After interviewing the children, we documented all the information
that we gathered in the form of Case Studies which we later
submitted to our NGO mentor.
Saturdays were often free days wherein children were let to relax and
recreational activities were arranged for them. In the first week, we
interacted with the children of the senior grades and helped them
understand the significance of choosing the right field for themselves
after 10th grade. It was a very insightful talk and the children
responded well too.
Learnings
One of the major learnings for me personally was learning to adjust
and compromise. Having to work for 8 hours consistently and
teaching children wasn’t an easy task but with the help of the
teachers present, we were able to withhold the attention of the
children and provide a better learning experience for them. We were
able to enhance our creativity while trying to teach children simple
topics but through various approaches, making learning interesting
and fun. Not just that, the whole process of documenting and
interviewing the children for writing down case studies truly brought
us closer to their struggles in daily lives and how irrespective of the
various problems that they face, they keep on working hard to
achieve greater dreams in their minds.
We were able to contribute to the NGO by extending our knowledge
to the children as well as working on documenting the lives of the
children.

Challenges Faced
Some of the challenges that we faced while teaching the children
were the huge knowledge gap that they had between the level of
education in the grade that they were currently enrolled in. Some of
the children, even at 10-11 years of age weren’t enrolled in schools
due to their parent’s financial situation and had to be taught from
scratch.
Others did not even have an ID to get admission into schools and
their parents had to be called to take on from there. This huge
knowledge gap made them self-conscious and often resistant to
trying, some of them even refusing to learn and staying in a shell.
That was a problem that we encountered while dealing with children.
Even children of 4th and 5th grade weren’t well-versed with the tables
and had to be repeatedly taught to do the same.
For the children who were just starting their education at 10-11 years
of age, we sat down with them and made them comfortable with
learning in an attempt to reduce their consciousness. After that, I sat
with them and helped them learn the alphabet and numbers and used
the dotted methods to make it convenient for them. It was very
difficult but an experience that definitely taught me a lot and, in a
way, moved me too.
Another challenge that we faced was that due to uneducated parents,
there was no one at their homes who could help the children with
their homework or even check if children did their homework
properly or at all. This was a problem but then we asked children to
get their notebooks signed by their parents which made it easier.
