 WHAT IS URBAN DESIGN?
Urban Design is the art of making safe, comfortable and inviting places for people. It includes
the way places look, work and feel. Urban design includes the connections between places and
buildings; the character of the built environment and the processes used for ensuring successful
villages, towns and cities.
It is the science and art of creating spaces for people, as well as a method of forming communi-
ty via the arrangement of space, time, and communication.

MY SELECTED TOWN
Location

MOTA TOWN
ETHIOPIA

Mota is a town in northwest Ethiopia. It

is located in the Misraq Gojjam Zone of
the Amhara Region on the secondary
road that links Dejen with Bahir Dar
overlooking the Abay River. The town
has a latitude and longitude of 11°5’N
37°52’E with an elevation of 2,487
meters above sea level.

Selection Criteria
Mota features a grid iron street system plan that allows for interconnection. Because all of the
roads are straight and broad, a person can easily go from one end of the city to the other, and the
town appears to be more packed with people than than automobiles. This demonstrates how grid
patterns function and infrastructure such as ditches and water supplies... are quickly and evenly
provided, as well as providing an easy means to increase infrastructures as the city grows.
The town appears to be easy to travel to the arterial route from any side of the city, and the land
divisions appear to be efficient and simple to maintain.
