The maximum continuously permissible negative sequence current is decisive for the thermal

3.1.4 Settings for the Generator Differential Protection (ANSI 87G) – address block 20
The stabilised differential current I> should be set about 20 per cent of the nominal machine current.
The un-stabilised high-current stage in address 2031 should be set higher than (1/ x`d= 4,7) of the
generator. Here it is set to 5.
For stator circuit criterion the reciprocal of the impedance (equal the admittance) is calculated from
the positive sequence systems of currents and voltages. In the admittance plane the stability limit of
machine is independent of the voltage. The shape of the under excitation trip characteristic is like
the under excitation limiting curve of the generator capability curve.
The excitation voltage supervision is set to approximately 50% of the no-load excitation voltage:

The rated machine data must refer to secondary values to enable setting. Furthermore it must be
noted, that rated current and rated voltage of the machine in general are not equal to the rated data
of the instrument transformers. Matching is performed according to the following formula:

Characteristic 3 serves to adapt the protection to the dynamic machine stability limits. If there are no
precise indications, the user must select a value 1/xdsec3 situated approximately between the
synchronous reactance and the transient reactance.
However, it should be greater than 90° to 110° is usually chosen for α3 in order to ensure that only a
dynamic instability leads to pickup with characteristic 3.

The maximum load current during operation is the most important criterion to be considered when
determining the over current pickup. A pickup by an overload must be excluded in any cases! For
this reason the address 3302 I> Pickup must be set above the maximum (over)load current to be
expected. Recommended setting: 1,2 to 1,5 times the nominal machine current ( secondary)

(Similarly-here not used-, zone reach of the overreach stage Z1b and the second stage Z2 can be
determined from e.g. 110% transformer reactance.)
The resistance setting R allows a margin for fault resistance, which appears as in-phase resistance,
in addition to the fault impedance, at the point of fault. It compromises, for example, arc resistances
in case of arcing faults.
Normally a resistance setting equal to the reactance setting is adequate (R/X=1) to form sufficient
arc resistance allowance.
The power swing block is mostly used for impedance stage1 because the delay time T1 for this
stage is set low. (address 3316A)
A compromise has to be found for the distance between power swing polygon and the trip polygon
( P/SPOL-TPOL address 3314 ) and for the rate of changing of the impedance vector ( dZ/dt
address 3315 )
Zlmin - Z1
dZ/dt = 300 Ω/s A safety factor of approx. 4 has to be
t taken into account.
The default setting for dZ/dt is 300 Ω/s, which is adequate for most applications. This is also the
basis for the minimum distance P/PSOL-TPOL assuming, that the detection for a power swing there
must be one impedance value between P/PSOL-TPOL.
Setting condition: P/PSOL-TPOL > dZ/dt x ∆t = 300 Ω/s 0,02 s = 6Ω (selected setting value: 8Ω)
The measured impedances during power swing condition are decisive for the settings.
Xd’ can be calculated from the per unit reactance xd’ as follows:
UN gen Nct 20000 20,94 12000
Xd' xd' 17 Ω
3 IN gen Nvt 3 8516 100 200
Where:
Zb Xd’ = 17 Ω
The secondary reactance of the unit transformer is derived from the primary reactance by
considering the instrument transformer ratios:
uK UN 2 Nct 20 202 12000
XKsec 16,02Ω
100 SN Nvt 100 296 200

UN gen Rated voltage of the generator transformer 20 kV
Nct Current transformer transformation ratio 12000
Nvt Voltage transformer transformation ratio 200
Xksec Secondary reactance of the generator transformer 16,02 Ω
The reactance of the grid is similar to the grid impedance and can be calculated from the apparent
three phase short circuit power of the grid. The following formula for the secondary grid reactance
relates the grid impedance to the nominal generator voltage:
1 Nct 1 12000
XNsec 2
XN 2
6,35 0,95
TR T rafo Nvt 20 200

XNsec Grid reactance related to the nominal generator voltage 0,95 Ω

TRTrafo Transformer Ratio (Un_Grid / UN gen = 400/20) 20
Nct Current transformer transformation ratio 12000
Nvt Voltage transformer transformation ratio 200
Assuming that characteristic 1 should cover 90 % of the transformer reactance, the setting of
address 3506 Zc results in:
Zc ≈ 90%. Xksec = 14,42 Ω
The width Za of the polygon is determined by the total impedance Ztot.. Assuming the power swing
angle δ =120 °between generator and transformer, Ztot is the sum of Zb and Zd.
The holding time (Addr. 3511) determines how long time a detected out-of-step condition (passing
through) is maintained so that the counter is incremented with the next passing through. This time
should be set higher than the longest expected slip period (i.e. the smallest slip frequency).
Conventional values lie between 20s and 30s.
The time settings are preliminary and should be adapted due to the voltage regulator characteristic
during commissioning.
Four high-accuracy frequency stages are available. Each stage can be set as over-frequency stage
or under-frequency stage. This is determined by the rated frequency as configured under address
270 and the set limit value. When the limit value is set smaller than the rated frequency, the stage
operates as under-frequency stage. When the limit value is set equal to the rated frequency, the
concerned stage is ineffective.
The frequency protection function is acting as back up protection to the turbine speed
monitoring protection. As a matter of principle, the setting values for frequency and delay
times depend on the values supplied by the turbine manufacturer.
3.1.12 Settings for the Over-excitation Protection (ANSI 24) – address block 43
The overexcitation protection serves to measure the voltage/frequency ratio which is proportional to
the induction B and puts it in relation to the BN nominal induction
The factor U/ f is given as quotient from voltage and frequency. Both values are related to nominal
values.
The over excitation function of the 7UM622 devices –F11 and –F21 will be used to protect the
generator itself against over excitation. Therefore the settings are based on the generator over
excitation curve provided by the manufacturer. For the protection of BAT and BBT transformer the
over excitation function in the device –F26 7UT633 will be used.
Time for cooling down (stator) from 100% to 0% for thermal image tcool down = 3600 s (address 4314).
Means after a cooling down time of 60 minutes the trip is reset.
The function requires the following settings to be made in Power System Data 1:

the 20 Hz voltage at the UE input.

3.1.14 Settings for Breaker Failure Protection (ANSI 50BF) – address block 70
For the use as a circuit-breaker failure protection, the protection must detect smaller fault currents
which have not been cleared by the circuit breaker.
The trip time delay is determined from the maximum tripping time of the circuit breaker, the reset
time of the current detectors plus a safety margin.
The inadvertent energizing protection serves to limit damage by accidental connection of the
stationary or already started, but not yet synchronized generator, by fast actuation of the mains
breaker. A connection to a stationary machine is equivalent to connection to a low-ohmic resistor.
Due to the nominal voltage impressed by the power system, the generator starts up with a high slip
as an asynchronous machine. In this context, impermissibly high currents are induced inside the
rotor which may finally destroy it.
3.1.16 Settings for DC Voltage / Current Protection (ANSI 59N, DC/ 51N, DC) – address
block 72
The protection is used to detect earth faults inside the static frequency converters during start-up
phase of gas turbines.
The monitoring function is able to detect 1- phase, 2- phase, or 3- phase failures in the VT
measuring voltage caused for example by blown fuses in case these are used instead of MCB’s. For

For zone 1: R1sec = 11,34
For zone 2: R2sec = 17,82
The power swing block is mostly used for impedance stage1 because the delay time T1 for this
stage is set low. (address 3316A)
A compromise has to be found for the distance between power swing polygon and the trip polygon
(P/SPOL-TPOL address 3314) and for the rate of changing of the impedance vector (dZ/dt address
3315)
Where:
Zb Xd’= 17 Ω
The secondary reactance of the unit transformer is derived from the primary reactance by
considering the instrument transformer ratios:
uK UN 2 Nct 20 20 2 12000
XKsec 16,02Ω
100 SN Nvt 100 296 200
The reactance of the grid is similar to the grid impedance and can be calculated from the apparent
three phase short circuit power of the grid. The following formula for the secondary grid reactance
relates the grid impedance to the nominal generator voltage:
1 Nct 1 12000
XNsec 2
XN 2
6,35 0,95
TR T rafo Nvt 20 200
Where:
XNsec Grid reactance related to the nominal generator voltage 0,95 Ω
XN Grid reactance (400kV /63kA) 6,35 Ω
TRTrafo Transformer Ratio (Un_Grid / UN gen = 400/20) 20
Nct Current transformer transformation ratio 12000
Nvt Voltage transformer transformation ratio 200
Assuming that characteristic 1 should cover 90 % of the transformer reactance, the setting of
address 3506 Zc results in:
Zc ≈ 90%. Xksec = 14,42
The overexcitation protection serves to measure the voltage/frequency ratio which is proportional to
the induction B and puts it in relation to the BN nominal induction
The factor U/ f is given as quotient from voltage and frequency .Both values are related to nominal
Time for cooling down (stator) from 100% to 0% for thermal image tcool down = 3600s (address 4134).
Means after a cooling down time of 60 minutes the trip is reset.
6.1.15 Settings for 90% Stator Earth Fault Protection U0> (ANSI 59N, 64G, 67G)
– address block 50
The function requires the following settings to be made in Power System Data 1:
Address 0223: UE connection should be set to “broken delta winding” for this application
to pickup the displacement voltage.
Address 0224: VT Ratio Prim/Sec. UE, calculation see below
For the conversion of the displacement voltage UE in primary quantities, the device requires the
primary/secondary transformation ratio of the transformer delivering the UE voltage. The following
formula applies:
U VT , prim 20 3
FACTOR UE 115,5
U E , sec 0,1
where
UVT, prim primary voltage 20 kV / √3
UE, sec secondary displacement voltage applied to the device 100 V
Factor UE should be entered under address 224 in the Power System Data 1.
The matching ratio between phase-to-phase measurement and broken delta measurement is √3.
This value should be entered under address 225 in the Power System Data 1.
The pickup value, address 5002, should be at least twice the value of the operational asymmetry. A
value of 5% to 10% the full displacement value is normal. Final determination of the setting value
occurs during commissioning with primary values.
6.1.16 Settings for R/E/F Protection with 1 to 3Hz Square Wave Voltage Injection (ANSI
64R 1to 3 Hz) address block 61
6.1.17 Settings for Breaker Failure Protection (ANSI 50BF) – address block 70
The monitoring function is able to detect 1- phase, 2- phase, or 3- phase failures in the VT
measuring voltage caused for example by blown fuses in case these are used instead of MCBs. For
further Information please refer to product manual 7UM 62, chapter 2.42.
The function enables a continuously checking of the measuring input values For further Information
please refer to product manual 7UM 62 chapter 2.42.2
The function is used for supervision of the tripping circuit of the generator circuit breaker channel
Address 0182 has to be set with 2 Binary Inputs. The supervision time for this function is set on
2 sec.
For further Information please refer to product manual 7UM 62 chapter 2.43.

The general protection data (P. System Data 2) include settings associated with all functions rather
than a specific protection, monitoring or control function Please ensure that the definition of signs
conforms to the direction of the reverse power protection and the forward power monitoring when
using these power functions.
During first energization of the transformer from the HV side too low 2nd harmonic content
may appear due to low remanence of the transformer.
Therefore before first backenergization the following temporary settings should be applied
in order to minimize the possibility for a spurious trip:
After successful first backenergization the original settings for addresses 1271 and 1272A should be
applied.
The over-current time protection is used as back-up function. The settings must be made in
accordance with the grading plan of the network. From the HV protection setting study the maximum
time delay for the HV back up protection must be given to allow proper setting. The time delay for
the back up O/C protection has to be set longer than this time but shorter than the short circuit ability
of the generator transformer.
The setting value for the back up over-current time protection has been chosen in that way that it will
work in case of an three or two-phase short circuit on the transformer LV winding.
The calculated values are:
S N(Tr) 296
I K 3phase 2,034 kA
3 UN uk 3 420 0,2
Whereby:
Ik-3phase 3-phase short circuit on HV side 2,034 kA
uk Impedance voltage 20%
SN(Tr) Rated power of transformer 296 MVA
UN Rated voltage of transformer HV side 420 kV
3 3
I K 2phase I K 3phase 2,034 1,76 kA
2 2
Whereby:
Ik-2phase 2-phase short circuit on HV side
With the I>> stage the unit transformer is protected against three-pole short circuits at the HV side.
The setting for sensing short circuits on the HV side of the transformer should be higher than the 3-
phase short circuit (>1,2 ∙ Ik-3phase).
With the I> stage the unit transformer is protected against currents higher than 0,8 ∙ IK-2phase.
The maximum inrush current for the transformer is not known. Therefore the inrush current is
assumed to:
1 1

This function is used as definite-time over-current stage for the unit auxiliary transformer protection.
Its settings are made in accordance with the grading plan of the MV network AE1172-&EFQ010-BY-
126001. The protection is designed to be the back-up protection of the over-current protection at the
feeder circuit breaker BBT01. The pickup value (address 3214) is set approximately 70% of the
phase-to-phase fault of the LV-side of the unit auxiliary transformer that it will work in case of an
three-or two phase short circuit on the transformer LV-winding. The time delay is set above the time
delay of the over-current protection on the LV-side.
Also this function is used as short-circuit stage for the unit auxiliary transformer protection and is the
back-up protection to the differential protection. Its settings are made in accordance with the grading
plan of the MV network. The high-current pickup value (address 3211) is set to approximately 80%
of the phase-to-phase value of the HV-side of the unit auxiliary transformer. A short time delay is set
to have no interference with the inrush current.
7.1.9 Settings for Over-current Earth 2 Protection (ANSI 50/51N) for 71BBT01
address block 38
This Function is used as earth-fault over-current stage for the unit auxiliary transformer protection
(71BBT01 / MV SWGR71BBE)
The settings are made in accordance with the grading plan of the MV network AE1172-&EFQ010-
BY-126001.
7.1.10 Settings for the Over-excitation Protection (ANSI 24) – address block 43
The over excitation protection serves to measure the voltage/frequency ratio which is proportional to
the induction B and puts it in relation to the BN nominal induction.
The factor U/f is given as quotient from voltage and frequency. Both values are related to nominal
values.
The over excitation function of the 7UT633 device –F26 will be used to protect the transformer itself
against over excitation. Therefore the settings are based on the transformer over excitation curve
provided by the manufacturer.
Time for cooling down from 100% to 0% for thermal image (address 4314 t cool down 3600 s) means
after a cooling down time of 60 minutes the trip is reset.
7.1.13 Settings for flexible functions (Flexible Function 01) (address block 255)
Twelve flexible functions can be activated and used for several protection functions. In this case the
first flexible function is used as Start-up Earth Fault Protection.
Only the parameters, which are relevant for differential protection and for the Earth Fault
Overcurrent Protection of the Unit transformer have been listed.
*Remark: At address 0221 is factor 1 while the input current must be treated without changes! At
the same time it must be known that the current displayed on the Relay Screen as
