1.The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make
comparisons where relevant

The picture illustrates the process of producing electricity in a hydroelectric power plant. It
can be seen that this process is cyclical and consists of five main steps: gathering water in the
upper reservoir, directing it to the turbine, operating the generator, storing water in the lower
reservoir, pumping water toward the upper reservoir. In addition, it can be broadly separated
into day and night stages.
Firstly, the intake of the dam is opened during the day; therefore, river water is stored in the
high-level reservoir. Then, the water flows to generate electricity through the turbines of the
power station. After that, the generated electricity is transmitted through the power lines to
the national grid, while the water moves to a low-level reservoir.
Moving to the night process, the reversible turbines that operate the generator during the
day allow the station to pump the water in the low-level reservoir back into the high-level
reservoir for use the next day.
3.The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

The picture illustrates the process involved in the production of electricity from geothermal
energy. It can be seen that there are five steps, beginning with the pumping down of cold water
and ending with the production of electricity by a generator.
Firstly, cold water travels down a 4.5km long pipe into an injection well. Next, the water goes
through an area called the geothermal zone, which contains a lot of hot rocks used to heat the
water.
After that, this hot water is stored in the production well, where it is pumped up to a
condenser, ready for the next stage. The hot water is then converted to steam which is allowed
to flow into a chamber containing the turbine and the generator. Finally, the hot steam rotates
the turbine which powers the generator to produce electricity. The resulting electricity is
distributed for different purposes through to various electricity grids.
