Locality  date(s):  ~400,000  years,  Middle  Pleistocene    
 
Location:  France,  42°50’  22’’N,  2°45’18’’E  
 
Short  Site  Description:  A  cave  site  featuring  abundant  lithic  and  faunal  remains  as  well  
as  100  hominin  remains  belonging  to  26  individuals  (half  of  which  are  adolescents).  
These  individuals  have  been  classified  as  Homo  heidelbergensis.    
 
Major  Fossil(s):  Arago  II  (  nearly  complete  mandible  of  an  adult  female),  Arago  XXI  
(deformed  cranial  fragment  of  a  young  adult  male),  Arago  XVLII  (Right  parietal  which  
likely  belongs  to  the  same  individual  as  Arago  XXI)  
 
Fossil  Significance:  Importantly,  Arago  XXI  preserves  the  facial  bones  of  a  potential  
Homo  heidelbergensis  (pre-­‐Neandertal  European  group).    
 
History:  Henry  de  Lumley  has  been  excavating  the  cave  since  1964.
