Injuries, health problems, loss of job

Overwhelmed by the difficulties of life, many parents take refuge in alcohol to forget to
the point of abusing it. In the song “safe inside” by James Arthur, he raises the concern of
parents seeing their children become adults. James Arthur’s lyrics indicate, “If you're home I just
hope that you're sober/” (line 11). Under the weight of many responsibilities, a lot of parents find
in alcohol an escape from the real world. However, they need to be careful because the abuse of
the latter could lead to health problems, job loss and divorce. And that’s not all, alcohol abuse is
also one of the main causes of traffics accidents, crimes and law enforcement as well as domestic
violence. So, parents need to moderate their alcohol consumption to be able to avoid mistakes
that could destroy their whole life. In addition to the negative influence of alcohol, the impact of
crime is also detrimental in society.
Despite the latest technological advances, crime is in full swing in modern society and
because of their fragility, many children find themselves directly or indirectly victims of these
acts. Through the song “safe inside”, James Arthur points out the worries parents are facing
seeing their children become adults. Talking about criminality, the lyrics indicate: “Oh, and
always the sun will rise/ Thank your lucky stars that you're alive/” (Arthur lines 18-19). Crime is
everywhere today. On the tv, at school or in the neighborhood a lot of children are seeing or
hearing violence everyday. Children exposed to several types of violence over a long period of
time are at risk of experiencing anxiety, depression, post-traumatic distress and other behavioral
problems. They may also start to show signs of aggression toward others. The effects of
exposure to violence may be seen in adulthood and can result in greater risk for substance use,
risky sexual behavior and unsafe driving behavior. That’s why it is important that parents protect
their children. Protection not only encompasses the family unit from within, but it also apply to a
family environment such as their neighborhood.
For many families living in poor neighborhood, insecurity is a permanent source of worry
in their everyday life. In the song “safe inside”, James Arthur extends this question of insecurity
to our overall contemporary society. Raising the concern of parents when their children are
outside, the lyrics indicate: “Will you call me to tell me you're alright?/ ’Cause I worry about you
the whole night/ Don't repeat my mistakes/ I won't sleep 'til you're safe inside/” (Arthur lines 7-
10). Drugs, murders, violence are some of common practices seen in poor neighborhood. For
families of those areas, fear and anxiety are feelings they have to constantly deal with. Parents
like children are often forced to miss their daily obligations such as school or work for fear of
being victims of various attacks; or collateral damage from armed clashes with gangs or drugs
dealers. This climate of terror has an even deeper effect on the whole community as job losses,
business closures, shortages and increase in the cost of living are to be expected in these areas.
And if the decision-makers of our society do nothing to remedy this situation, many families will
find themselves homeless and the entire economy of the country will suffer.
