COMPARATIVE FORM OF ADVERBS

2.1. Short adverbs (So sánh hơn của trạng từ ngắn)

Trạng từ ngắn là trạng từ có một âm tiết.

Ví dụ: fast, hard, late,…

Ta thêm -er vào cuối trạng từ ngắn. Khi trạng từ kết thúc bằng -e, chỉ cần thêm -
r để chuyển sang dạng so sánh.

Ví dụ: fast -> faster, hard -> harder, late -> later,…

S + (not) V + adv- er + than + noun/pronoun/clause

Ví dụ:

She studies harder than she used to do in the past. (Cố ấy học chăm chỉ hơn so
với quá khứ.)

This morning, I went to school later than Tim did. (Sáng nay, tôi đi đến trường
muộn hơn Tim.)

Why does Henry run faster than he did? (Tại sao anh ta lại chạy nhanh hơn lúc
trước vậy?)

2.2.Long adverbs ( So sánh hơn của trạng từ dài)

Trạng từ dài là trạng từ có hai âm tiết trở lên (trạng từ dài thường kết thúc bằng
-ly). Các trạng từ này thường là tính từ và thêm đuôi -ly vào.

Ví dụ: slow -> slowly, careful -> carefully, fluent -> fluently, beautiful ->
beautifully, sad -> sadly, recent -> recently, strange -> strangely,…

Lưu ý với các tính từ kết thúc bằng -y, ta bỏ -y và thêm -ily vào.

Ví dụ: happy -> happily, dirty -> dirtily, pretty -> prettily,…

Ví dụ:

Susan runs more slowly than I do. (Susan chạy chậm hơn tôi.)

No one in Sue’s class speaks English more fluently than her. (Không ai trong

lớp của Sue nói tiếng Anh lưu loát hơn cô ấy.)
My mom works the housework more carefully than my father does. (Mẹ tôi làm
công việc nhà cẩn thận hơn bố.)

2.3. Các dạng đặc biệt trong so sánh của trạng từ

Ví dụ: From my viewpoint, Maris cooks better than Chloe does. (Từ góc nhìn
của tôi, Maris nấu ăn ngon hơn Chloe.)

Lưu ý phân biệt “farther” và “further”: cả hai đều mang nghĩa “xa hơn”.
Nhưng “farther” dùng để chỉ khoảng cách vật lý. Còn “further” không chỉ dùng
để chỉ khoảng cách vật lý mà còn các loại khác như không gian, thời gian và vân
vân. Khi nói về mức độ, cấp độ, chúng ta chỉ có thể dùng “further”.
