Topic: Theory X and Y Subject: Educ-204

Reflection/ Reaction Paper no. 1

1. What significant learning did you get from the topic?

The significant learning, I get from this study is that Theory X and Theory Y are both common to
us in the field. Theory x and y are part of motivational theories but both the theories are very different
from each other. Theory X gives importance to supervision while the Y stresses on rewards and
recognition. In a work place, there are workers or member of organization who seemed to be unmotivated
when it comes to assigned tasks, on the other hand, there are very active and positive in working. Two
different characteristics may also result to two different ways in management. One can be strict and
particular with standards and outputs and the other can be very open-minded. Theory X is the
authoritative and traditional style of management. Theory X managers/leaders assume that people are
lazy, don't want to work and it is the job of the manager to force or coerce them to work, that’s why
people working for these managers tend to be motivated by fear and feel unappreciated. While in Theory
Y, managers/Leaders assume people will perform well if treated positively, and that higher order needs
dominate most individuals. People are viewed as "assets" that should be valued and developed. Theory Y
managers tend to be participative when making decisions, and value both results and relationships. These
managers tend to delegate and empower their people because they trust them and feel they will do good
work, priorities will be given to developing positive work environments, and expressing regular
recognition and appreciation. These managers will also feel that people are important and worth
developing. People working for these managers tend to feel appreciated and dignified, and will generally
have good morale and feel motivated in their assigned task or daily work.

2. Why is the learning of value to you as an educator or as future school administrator?

As an educator or a future leader, I value these learnings to help me become a good leader someday.
By knowing what is Theory X and Y management is, I will be able to realize that being a leader does not
only mean that you are the sole responsible and the only one who make decisions. Rather, the power you
hold as a leader means uniting the entire administration to come up with a common goal by applying
theories like X and Y and to be able to act as one for greater impact and achievements. If God, given me a
chance to be a leader someday, I would apply the Theory Y, instead of X, I would ask my employees for
real solutions to real issues in the workplace and work collectively to solve the issues through mutual
discussion and implementation of modified and approved solutions by the workforce. I will reward the
employee who has the most effective solution with tangible and intangible rewards to help them grow in
their own confidence of their greatness.

3. What are your realization, insights, and discoveries regarding the topic?

I have discovered that there is a significant relationship between the principals’ management practices
when correlated with their work attitudes, and this is identified as Fayol’s principle of authority. This
study recommends that as school managers, principals should foster a good relationship with teachers or
workers. In addition, based on the theories y the principals should maintain positive relationships with
teachers for development and maintenance of dynamic and harmonious relations are essential in all
organizations. In theory X , since it was stated that this theory is traditional way of management of
leader, my insight about this theory is instead of applying it, we should transform it into new way of
management because today’s generation I suggest that we not use and apply old management, because
we are already in 21st century, what is important today is to work constructively , and maintain the
positive relationship with workers to attain and achieve the goals of our organization.
