Introduction
This Special Instruction outlines the various forms of product marking on Reman products. Each product will be marked with a part number, serial
number or date code, and other manufacturing facility-specific markings. When reporting a possible quality issue on a remanufactured product, or
requesting troubleshooting assistance, it is helpful to provide photos of these product markings. This document contains some examples of Cat®
Reman product markings, and is not intended to be all inclusive. If the product does not have a Reman part number, it is likely a new part
substituted for a Reman order.

If a problem is noticed upon receipt, a photo of the package label is helpful to identify the packaging date code, packager, country of origin and
sometimes a serial number.

Reman Engines
Reman engines are fitted with a serial number plate which includes the part number, engine model, Reman engine serial number, reference serial
number, and additional performance information.
The Reman engine serial number is used for warranty claims if the engine is a prime product (On-Highway, Industrial, Marine Propulsion).
For captive engines (Cat Machines, Marine Auxiliary, Genset Engines), this engine serial number allows information to be found in the Technical
Marketing Information system (TMI), but is not used to file warranty claims. Claims should be filed on the prime product serial number ( Cat
Machine, Package Genset, etc.), and the Reman engine serial number should be recorded in the "Component Serial Number" field.

Reman Long and Short Blocks

Prior to 2012, Reman short and long blocks were marked using a date code rather than a serial number.

In 2012, Reman short and long blocks added a serial number. This was required for traceability to meet governmental emissions regulations.
Short and long blocks do not have data in TMI and this serial number is not used to file warranty claims. Claims should be filed on the prime
product serial number and the Reman short or long block serial number should be recorded in the "Component Serial Number" field.

Engine Information Plate

Reman engines, short blocks, and long blocks will also have an information plate to document the block and crankshaft size.
Note: This plate is used for all Reman blocks and cranks, though some sizes may not apply. The engine information plate is used for various
products, the various markings will apply uniquely to each vintage.
This plate indicates:
(-) The dimension of the crank bore (standard or oversized measurement)
(-) The dimension of the crankshaft (standard or undersized measurement)
Reman Cylinder Heads

Reman cylinder heads are marked with a date code rather than a serial number. The date code may include one or more letters which indicate the
remanufacturing facility. A single number following a date code indicates the shift on which the cylinder head was remanufactured.
The part number and date code may be located in various locations on the cylinder head casting and may not be visible when the head is

assembled onto an engine.

If a Reman part number (for example, 0R, 10R, 20R) cannot be located, the head is likely a new Cat® cylinder head.
Reman Crankshafts
If the crankshaft is a true Reman crankshaft, the new part number will be ground off, and the Reman part number will be stamped on one of the last
two counterweights on either end of the crankshaft.

(-) .635MM (journals are 0.635mm undersized)
Many Reman crankshaft part numbers are "Upgrade to New" (UTN), so will not have a Reman part number.

Reman Water and Oil Pumps

Reman water and oil pumps have a date code and the format varies by remanufacturing plant.
This example shows:

Reman Fuel Pumps

Some Reman fuel pumps use serial numbers and others use date codes, or include both. The reference part number indicates the equivalent new
Cat part number the Reman pump was built to replace.

Reman Connecting Rods

The part number on a Reman connecting rod will be the part number for the connecting rod assembly (connecting rod and rod eye bushing). The
date code will be in the "NUMERALKOD" format.

(-) Source Facility Code: EB (Shanghai, China)
Connecting rods retain the original markings that match the cap to the rod. This marking is unique for each different rod.
The supplier code, date code, and sequence number are stamped on the side of a 3500 connecting rod.
Reman Pistons
Pistons and piston crowns may be remanufactured or new. The part number will be printed onto the top surface of the crown and piston if
remanufactured. Piston skirts can be new or remanufactured by polishing. If no Reman part is present on a piston or crown, the part is a genuine
new Cat® piston.
Reman Fuel Injectors

Reman fuel injector markings vary by engine model (injector model).

Reman fuel injectors are remanufactured in Shanghai, China, and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. Injectors remanufactured in Shanghai will include the
"EB" source code.
DIFN
Direct injection fuel nozzles formerly had a "NUMERALKOD" date code.
This example shows:

After October 1, 2012, DIFNs have a serial number.

MUI
Mechanical unit injectors are labeled with the part number and a serial number.

HEUI
Reman hydraulic electronic unit injectors will have the Reman part number, serial number, and a validation code. C7/C9 HEUI injectors are
packaged with a CD that contains the trim file for this injector and others built around the same time. The trim file is also available in SIS Web.
There are several generations of HEUI fuel systems. Some examples of fuel injector marking and trim practices are shown below.

Reman ECMs
Reman ECMs are stamped with the part number, part version number, and a serial number that includes a manufacture date code.

Reman Starters and Alternators

Reman starters and alternators have serial number plates that vary by supplier.

The following identification plates use a month code to indicate manufacture month. Refer to Table 3 to decipher the month code.

Reman Drivetrain Components

Unlike new Cat® transmissions, torque converters, and final drives, Reman major drivetrain products are not given standard Cat® serial numbers.
Instead, these major components are labeled with a production order number stamped into the serial number plate.
This serial number provides no manufacture date information, but the corresponding manufacture date may be acquired by submitting a Parts
Technical service request using the Product Support Customer Relationship Management system (PSCRM,
https://productsupport.crm.dynamics.com). When submitting a PSCRM service request, provide photographs of the product serial number plate.
The serial number, Reman part number, and remanufacturing date code are provided both on the serial tag on the unit as well as the shrink wrap
the unit is packaged in at the factory.

Reman Drivetrain Components that Require Serial Number for Machine Software
Certain machine configurations require a drivetrain component serial number to identify that the correct drivetrain software is being installed.

Reman drivetrain components that have this requirement will now have the appropriate new equivalent drivetrain component serial number prefix
(5) followed by an R (6) to identify the component as a Reman and the last four digits of the Reman Work Order Number (7). When updating the
machine configuration or drivetrain software, use the complete serial number provided on the plate
Reman Hydraulic Cylinders

Reman hydraulic cylinders will have a part number, job number, and a 4 or 5-digit date code.

somewhere else on the rod.
