Procedure

WARNINGS
• Be careful when you work on the engine after shutdown. The engine and engine oil can
stay hot for a long time. If you do not obey this warning, injury can occur.

See applicability on the first page of the DM BD500-A-J74-00-00-00AAA-310A-A

BD500-A-J74-00-00-00AAA-310A-A
2019-08-21 Page 5
• Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for all material used and the
manufacturers safety instructions for all equipment used. If you do not obey this warning,
injury can occur.

1 Make sure that you remove and install protection covers as necessary to prevent
damage to the engine.
2 Make sure that you wipe clean all parts and tools as necessary to remove unwanted
debris and prevent damage to the engine.

WARNING
Ignition system voltage is dangerously high. The ignition switch must be in the OFF position for
five minutes minimum before you remove or install any ignition components. You must wait five
minutes to let all of the electrical energy out of the system. If you do not obey this warning,
injury or death can occur.

3 Examine the ignition system for correct installation of the electrical components, wire
braid fraying, and for blockage of cooling air openings.
3.1 Examine for correct installation, clearance, and serviceability of the following
components:

- Ignition exciter
- Igniter plug
- Ignition cables

4 Do the inspection of the ignition exciter as follows:

Refer to Fig. 1
4.1 If necessary, remove the ignition exciter. Refer to BD500-A-
J74-11-01-00AAA-520A-A.
4.2 Examine the ignition exciter. Refer to Table 6.
Table 6 Ignition Exciter Inspection
Examine Damage Disposition

Case cracks, dents or abrasions. Cracks, dents and/or abrasions are No case cracks, dents or
found. abrasions are permitted. Replace
the ignition exciter. Refer to
BD500-A-J74-11-01-00AAA-720A-A.

Input connector bent pins. Bent pins are found. Make the bent pins straight. Use
a socket contact (of correct size)

See applicability on the first page of the DM BD500-A-J74-00-00-00AAA-310A-A

Do not use needle nose pliers

Input connector damaged pins. Damaged pins are found. No damaged pins permitted.
Replace the ignition
exciter. Refer to BD500-A-
J74-11-01-00AAA-720A-A.

Input connector thread damage. Input connector thread damage. If a small quality of thread
damage is found, repair the
threads with a thread chasing
die (51563, Pt. No. 0.7500-20
UNEF-2A). If the threads are
damaged more than the chasing
die can repair, replace the
ignition exciter. Refer to BD500-A-
J74-11-01-00AAA-720A-A.

Note
The igniter plug can show indications of superficial corrosion because of tarnishing of the external
surfaces. This condition is usual and does not effect the form, fit, or function of the igniter. It is not
necessary to clean or remove the tarnish. Igniter plugs that are in the limits of all inspections and
tests can return to service.

discoloration or pitting, replace the
ignition exciter. Refer to BD500-A-
J74-11-01-00AAA-720A-A.

Note
Arcing is identified by pitting or discoloration on the contact button. Flashover is identified by carbon
tracking which shows as narrow black carbon deposits that start from the contact button and continue
along the ceramic inner side wall.
Outlet thread damage. Thread damage is found. If a small quantity of thread
damage is found, repair the
threads with a thread chasing
die (51563, Pt. No. 0.7500-20
UNEF-2A). If the threads are
damaged more than the chasing
die can repair, replace the
ignition exciter. Refer to BD500-A-
J74-11-01-00AAA-720A-A.

4.3 Install the ignition exciter. Refer to BD500-A-J74-11-01-00AAA-720A-A.

5 Do the inspection of the igniter plugs as follows:

5.1 Remove igniter plug A or B from the engine. Refer to BD500-A-
