- is undertaken, for example, when a reader wants to enjoy a short story, follow a line of
argument in a newspaper editorial, or understand the main stages in a textbook
description of a manufacturing process.

Reflective reading
- involves episodes of reading the text and then pausing to reflect and backtrack, for
example, when a reader wants to check whether a new line of argument in a political
text is consistent with opinions expressed earlier in the same articles.

Skimming
- is used to get a global impression of the content of a text. An instance would be
reviewing a long text by reading rapidly, skipping large chunks of information, and
focusing on headings and first lines of paragraphs

Intensive reading
- is used to obtain detailed meaning from the text, to develop reading skills – such as
identifying main ideas and recognizing text connectors – and to enhance vocabulary
and grammar knowledge
